Pics of good Rice Coal

PostBy: jrn8265 On: Wed Jul 28, 2010 9:54 am

Can somebody please share with me some pics of "good rice Coal" I had a batch delivered and want to compare it to the pics. The delivery guy just said it was "lehigh valley coal" from a breaker. It is shiny and can be broken if I use two hands.
I throw some on the pile and occasionally sounds like glass. I also notice there are quite a bit of smaller barley size mixed in as well. Appreciate it!

Sounds like normal rice coal to me. You shouldn't have too many fines in it though.

Getting a picture of coal is pretty tough, the picture in the header for example I created. It's not black enough but looks better with the gray...

This is probably best one I've seen:

I'm suspicious of any coal from unnamed sources. It could be very good, or very bad. I don't know of any operating mines or breakers in the Lehigh valley (correct me if I'm wrong), but he is right, it is from a breaker! ;) You'll know how good it is soon!

What is the worst that can happen with "bad" coal?

I have a stoker, the coal looks clean though lots of fines. (no rocks or twigs, fines about the size of barley)

Coal sounds like glass when dropped on each other.

I perhaps would just not burn as hot as "good" coal and create a lot of ash unlike "good" coal?

I would not have a showstopper in regards to fuel for the winter, would I if the coal is "bad"?

Thanks!

With a stoker "bad coal" may clinker up pulling unburnt coal off of the stoker ramp. Another issue may be bridgeing of coal as it collects in the ash pan. If you are aware of these issues and keep an eye on these symptoms you should be fine. Also with many fines more frequent cleaning below the grate may be necessary due to the falling particles finding their way through the grate.
