NEPACrossroads fuel comparison calculators is best and easiest fuel comparison calculators I have ever come across, even the global warming people should be able to use. The bottom line is "Oil" is the root of all evil. We fight wars because of oil regardless of what some may say the reason is. We complain about driving costs and heating costs. Oil is the USA drug of choice. And we bought in and we are hooked. https://coalpail.com/fuel-comparison-calculator-home-heating A link should be on top of page of this forum, so people realize the true cost difference.

I picked up my coal (Blaschak rice coal) for the upcoming heating season. Paid $951 for three pallets (7,200 #), or approx. $264/ton + tax. If you can get your coal now, it may be a good idea. My supplier said that he will have to raise his prices around June on his new shipments based on the conversations he is having with Blaschak.

Unfortunately, while burning coal gets us away from other more expensive fuels, its costs are still tied to gas and oil prices that affect all of us, from the actual mining itself to shipping in the end.

+ tax. Interesting. No tax on heating fuel in Maine, therefore no tax on coal. It is about the only thing that isn't taxed. :x

Actually, based on my memory, I think it was a reduced tax similar to how they tax our propane. Our normal tax is 8 something, but the fuel tax was 4.??%

In NY the state doesn't charge tax, but many counties do tax various heating fuels at various rates. Stupid, if you ask me, how many times have you paid a tax on firewood?? ;) Why make lawbreakers out of a sizable segment of your society because you want to squeeze a few extra dollars from those few individuals who have become successful enough at selling firewood/coal/pellets/etc. that they will actually do it legitimately as a business. I suggest that anyone in counties where coal/firewood etc. taxes apply contact their county and let them know that you vote and you don't support this tax; it's a small enough revenue generator in most counties that with a few people complaining it may actually be removed.

It's a 4% tax here in Schenectady County which already has some of the highest taxes outside of the NYC metro area.

You can get around it if you pick up the coal from outside the county.
