One of my dealers just had an AK Kodiak traded in on a coal furnace he sold and will be going over it/rebuilding it during the next few days. He sold the Kodiak a couple/few years ago to this guy even though he recommended a furnace to him at the time.
Now after using the Kodiak in the basement he has decided to go with the dealers original recommendation and replace it with a furnace that will tie into his other central system.
What things should I look for when I take a look at this stove once he is done with it?
We talked about new firebrick, glass, seals, paint etc. It will also come with a fan and hopper that it has now and I will have him add a Bi-Metal Thermostat and the brass trim kit. (As a concession to the CFO who enjoys pretty things in the house!!)
The AK Channing he had just gone through that was in his shop I mistook for a new stove until he pointed it out as a used one that he had rebuilt.
I have heard about stoves warping etc. but have never seen one and would appreciate any pointers to look out for even though I do not believe that this stove suffers from that malady!
If you have specifics about this stove or general comments on what to watch out for when looking at/buying a used/rebuilt coal stove your wisdom would be appreciated!!

Any place that has a gasket...
Use the dollar bill test...
Close the door on the bill; it should grip the bill...
Grates will warp if it was mistreated...
Use a straight edge to check...
Any baffle plates inside...
Check for warping...
Check the welds for splits or rework...
Others can be more specific to the Kodiak...

The CFO and I stopped by the dealers shop today to see what progress had been made on the stove so far. We were pleased to see new paint, glass and seals already in place. The color (Forest Green) is even better than I hoped and should look nice in the living room which is important to the CFO.
Still waiting on the brass trim, fan and thermostat still needs to be put on and the new ash pan and hopper is not in yet.
It has the older style fire-brick in it and I am not sure when they redesigned for the new generic bricks or how old it would make this stove.
Anyway looking forward to it being completed and installed. I have enough coal in the mud-room 5 feet away from the stove to more or less last through the winter.
