Well here it is July 5th and today we commemorate the debut of the first canned beer in 1935.

The same day in 1946, the bikini was unveiled. Probably by a bunch of guys drinking canned beer...... :dancing:

And then  steamup :band:

We also honor the birth of P.T. Barnum and the death of Ted Williams.

Thank you! Just got back from Boston, had two pints of Sam Adam's at Cheers, then hung out awhile at Quincy Market before going up to Union Bay Oysters House for Fried Oysters. We where home Albany NY 4 hours later including the Subway ride, surprised at how well we did, and that was rush hour included! I do not know how folks handle that rush hour traffic week after week, my commute is 4 miles, and 4 traffic lights.

So today July 19th we recognize another day in history:

 wlape3 :band:

The only notable thing I can find was this day in history the state of Massachussetts launched an offensive against a British outpost near the Penobscot Penninsula which is now Maine. The MA offensive was short lived and resulted in the 2nd biggest military defeat the US has seen. The largest defeat remains Pearl Harbor.

Way to go MA !!!!!!!!!

I think the largest defeat is how the populace of this state just lays down and lets the state gov't run roughshod over it's rights ... then continually re-elect the same dolts back to office again! But that's another topic for another day! :)

Rick,

Thanks for the congrats, but I think the credit has been misdirected. In the accounts I have read, MA asked for help from the other colonies to dislodge the British from the Penobscot peninsula. The fear was that the natives would support the British vs. the colonies, and undermine the revolution. The "help" that was provided by the other colonies was small, and included a fellow (Commodore Dudley Saltonstall) from CT who was in the continental navy and was supposed to "lead" the naval portion of the assault. Under his guidance, the naval forces sat around when they had the advantage, and got pounded after waiting long enough for British reinforcements to arrive. His incompetence was singled out afterwards by a board of inquiry as the primary cause of the debacle, and he was court-martialed.

So go ahead and laugh, you other colonies, but next time MA is trying to save your bacon (as well as its own) you might consider providing some actual help.

Mike

P.S. Not sure where you got the info about "2nd biggest military defeat", but I believe there were far more casualties when Philadelphia fell to the British, and when the Continental Army subsequently wintered at Valley Forge.

Alot has changed in 230-some-odd years. I wouldn't count on this state for ANYTHING today.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled birthdays. :D
