Blaschak good enough or make trip for Superior

PostBy: cowentz On: Thu Sep 09, 2010 4:19 pm

I am in york PA and this will be my first year burning coal. I can get Blaschak coal at Hoke Mills for $210 a ton. Is this good enough coal or do you strongly suggest taking half a day to drive up to the superior coal mine?

Well here is the way I think. It's always better to take a trip
to the breaker. It's cheaper, but that's not the idea. It's a road
trip like no other.
How much you overload your truck or trailer is directly proportional
to how exciting the trip home will be.
If food is a driving force in you life, make sure you work breakfast
or lunch into the trip - or both.
You can also go the the breaker in Ravine to get Blaschak. It's closer
than Superior.

Superior has a good product, and from what I have read on here Blaschak is liked by some and not so much by others. You would save $50 a ton at Superior, unless they raised prices since my last delivery, and if you have the ability to haul several tons at a time it would probably be a cost saving proposition to take that half day but if you only plan to buy less than a ton at a time I think I would get it locally. You will have to figure the cost of your trip and value of your time. There are many folks on here that have spent a lot of time and who knows what cost traveling around trying different coal from different sources and different breakers, to them it is probably more of a hobby than anything and they may have their idea of the “best” coal. I get mine at Superior because they are closest and some other reasons not relevant to this discussion.

PS I just read tsb’s reply and he makes a good point, it’s always fun to blow a day on a good road trip and who doesn’t like to eat.

Superior is superior, but you can't go wrong with Blaschak. It's good stuff too. Whichever is easier or cheaper, you'll be happy with either one.

I would be the first one on here to say go to Superior 160 a ton In the past However the coal that is coming out of the breaker now is no where near as good as it once was I would go to either Blaschak/Franklin breaker 170 or 175 a ton in Ravine PA off exit 104 I-81 to Route 125 or Run up to exit 116 I-81 Route 901 and go to UAE Harmony mine 150 a ton.
