Today as the coffee brews we should remember how life was before the terrorist strike. It's hard to grasp that nine years has passed since that awful day. Some things in life take a long time to heal, but that wound will stay open forever. *sigh*
Hurricane Earl sure brought Fall in a hurry. Within 36 hours of Earl passing by we went from 65 degree night and 85* days to near 40 at night & 70's days. Not that I'm complaining! I do enjoy this time of year, it's just that to accept the start of this lovely cool air is to accept that snowflakes aren't too far away. Time to get ready to burn anthracite! You bituminous people need to prep too. Let's get those bins loaded and new ash pans on their way. Which reminds me, I have promised to make one for a member.... I gotta get to it! Hang in there Lowfog!
I got given a 12' by 20' "fabric garage" yesterday. It's a pretty good quality one, all I had to do was go take it apart & take it away. The top is fine, but the ends are beat some. I'm going to put new zippers in one end and dialed the 800 number on it and ordered one new end. It's going to be handy to have a place for the new lawn mower.
Hope you all have a fine weekend! Did anyone go get that free coal new Jersey? Road trippppp!

Nine years ago today I was on Kennedy Memorial Drive, Oakland, ME just off I 95. It was a Tuesday, I guess everyone know where they were and what they were doing when they found out. This morning its Oatmeal with raisins, a little cinnamon and sweetened with honey with a couple cups of Starbucks. Today I have to see if I can get two windows put in. I removed one window and a door yesterday and have to install two windows in their place, the door was never used and not needed, another door at the other side of the house is planned but that is a project for another day or I should say year. It is always fun working on old houses. I’m working in the “new” part. It is a single story kitchen addition that probably dates back to the 50’s. The walls are rough cut 2x4s, plus or minus 3/8” here and there. One thing I found out doing work on these old houses is that levels and squares just get in the way and cause more problems. Windows and doors must be installed level and square but the rest just rolls with the flow. I best get at it the weather man said rain tomorrow, it would be nice to have that wall ready for siding by the end of the day. Everyone have a great week.

I'll always remember where I was 9 years ago about now. I was outside working in the garage when a good friend called my cell phone. My hands were full so I couldn't get to it in time to answer it. I caught his message a few minutes later. So it began ...

I was in the middle of my AM work out. Back then I was into body building, and was in my jr yr of highschool. I was watching good morning America while working the eliptical, when I watched the first one hit. I was in awe, but everyone thought it was an accident. Untill the second.
By that time I had gotten dressed in my street clothes and was on the way to school. We spent all day watching tv. Seeing the reports. And the reaction of all the public service groups. It was a crazy week.
These days, I am employees in a field that was created because of these actions. I don't work at the airport, I do the same thing from a small boat on the water. Patrolling the shipping ports and conducting vessel checks.
In my spare time, I am a volunteer firefighter/paramedic. Our FD is coining with several others this morning for a 9/11 rememberance ceremony.

Yep, I was thinking that the Saturday Coffee thread would end up about 911.. we all remember. And we should never forget.
I was at home, I got a phone call from a friend, very short and curt,, Turn you TV on, and get on CNN. and he hung up.. I did as 'directed'.. and watched the second plane hit.. Then went and got my parents to come into the house and watch with me.. We watched the two towers collapse..
On the other subject, the weather has been in the high 60's to low 70's and lows in the low to mid 40's.. the house has slowly gotten colder.. there are more hours of cool to cold temps than there are warm hours..
So this morning I fired up the propane boiler.. to warm up the floor in the main part of the house.. I think if I warm it up once, it will keep the house at temp for at least 8-12 hours in these moderate temps.. maybe longer.. The floor was 65*, I'll warm it up to 72* and shut down the heat. and see how long it lasts.. I already am enjoying the warmth through my socks..
Hope everyone has a nice weekend.

Well, I found a burst of energy & spent the morning moving coal. Once a year I remove the roof of the coal bin & using my backhoe, I fill 'er up from the big stash. Today was the day! I'm now all set for another Maine wintah. Jusssst as I was putting the last screw back in the roof I discovered where the wasps built their nest this year.....in part of the roof, right where my ladder was! I was trapped on the roof for a few minutes until I saw a lull in the bee action. I scampered down the ladder to mother Earth. Tonight...wasp spray!

Small world! I was at my job just a mile or so up KMD from you. Though not much work got done that morning. We had a couple TVs and everyone in the building was gathered around them. It was close to unbelievable to watch the towers come down, never would have predicted they would both collapse like that.gaw wrote:Nine years ago today I was on Kennedy Memorial Drive, Oakland, ME just off I 95.
Yes! I'm not a carpenter myself, but a few years ago I hired one to replace the entrance door from a porch into the house. I was pretty upset to see he put it in diagonally, until I got my level and found out the door was fine, everything else was crooked.gaw wrote:One thing I found out doing work on these old houses is that levels and squares just get in the way and cause more problems.

The second on is mostly wooped. We're guessing about 3 - 3 1/2 ton. We ran out of truck space after ~2 3/4 was loaded up.
It was what we'd call range; nut and pea and what ever was in there the past thirty years or so. We found numerous blue and red painted coal in that basement pile. The pile was destined for a Jotul 507 greenie. Cute little bugger.

I was working, was at an account in Spring Valley, NY when the planes hit. I moved to another stop in Tallman (Suffern) but ended up spending most of the time in my truck listening to the radio. Sometimes I still find it hard to believe the towers fell.
Thanks to Dave-Vig II and my buddy Kevin for help with this task. There's about 1/2 ton more that I still have to get out.

Should not be a 1/2 ton left in the bid That truck has enough room left in it for 1000lbs at least look at all that roomWood'nCoal wrote:I was working, was at an account in Spring Valley, NY when the planes hit. I was at work, when they came down. It was sad. An old guy at the office pulled out an old black and white tv from his desk and put it on. We were sent home early. Today was a busy day, I replaced the stovepipe and changed my setup a little by rotating the stove( I have a post in the handfired section), and took my daughter to the park and played softball, and did a few chores. Overall it was a good day, got something accomplished and had quality time with my daughter.

I think now there may be more like 3/4 ton left in that bin. Yea, we could have fit more in my truck, but we stopped because there was no way we would have been able to get all the coal left in the bin loaded, I would have had to go back again either way.Should not be a 1/2 ton left in the bid That truck has enough room left in it for 1000lbs at least look at all that room

Dave sent me a text, he weighed his truck at work. What we thought was 1/2 to 3/4 ton turned out to be 2,140 lbs! We were being careful not to overload his F-150. So I'm guesstimating the total haul will be at least 3 1/2 to 3 3/4 ton.
