Base Burner Stoves
Can someone please explain in detail (maybe with a diagram) where the exhaust travels in a base burner coal stove? I've read about how it works, but I'm the kind of guy that needs to see pictures or drawings to really understand.
Thanks!

I am really bad at drawing, but maybe this helps. Believe me, I have no aspirations to take up an art profession...

dlj, don't knock your art work, I can understand your drawing so it's good enough. I do have a request though. Could make another sketch just showing the double walled base and baffle. I'd like to understand that better.
Thanks JB

That's a really tough drawing, what exactly do you want to see about it? That would help me understand what aspect you are trying to understand.JB Sparks wrote:dlj, don't knock your art work, I can understand your drawing so it's good enough. I do have a request though. pretty much how the exhaust travels through the base and what the baffle you mentioned does. The reason I'm curious about the base burner is because I think it would make a cool project to make my Chubby into a base burner.

If I had to replace parts of the stove, there are several foundries that will do custom work. William sent me info on one in Maine a while ago. I was just looking for it but can't remember where it is. You are right, William will be here soon... I'm sure... I'm also sure he can tell you the place in Maine right off the top of his head...
The drawing you would need is tough. Let me see what I can do. It won't be tonight...

Do you have a baseburner that needs repair? If so what brand is it? The back pipe is really two pipes in one housing. One goes down and the other goes up.

I've decided to bump up the discussion on the Glenwood. If you have more questions after you read it, I will do my best to answer them for you.
OK, I think I got it. the base is a separate compartment under the ash pan area right? I took a closer look at your pics. The one that shows the base area has that baffle running fron the rear of the compartment to about 3/4 toward the front of the compartment right?
Excellent - I now understand. Why don't stove manufacturers make something like this now? Is it because they want us to burn more coal - or are they just so concerned about profit that they send their castings off to China and China can't make such accurate parts? Does anyone else have any ideas as to why they're not made any more? Has anyone tried to modify their existing stove to be a base burner?
