I'll try to keep this short. I just got a new (to me coal insert) it is a hand feed but has a hopper on top of the grates Just wanted to know If anyone knew what brand this is?
Part 2 I have a 13 x 13 chimney, its only 13 feet tall from dampner plate to top of exhaust. Ive read a few comments on the board concerning chimneys. I read somewhere bigger is not always better. Its clay tile so i'm not worried about that . Its the draft I'm more concerned with. How high should I go with flue pipe past the dampner shelf? Do I need a manual dampner in the pipe? the insert has a 6 inch pipe exhaust, Should I go all the way up or will a 5 foot section give me what I need? I will close off the shelf with a steel plate and run the section up. I have a 5 inch 316 stainless liner that someone gave me. (i don't plan on useing it) but thats the advise i'm looking for. Can it be used?

13 X 13 chimney sounds too big for your stove to have good draft. I would run a 6 inch as far up as I could. Heck 4 pieces of 3 foot lengths is 12 feet. 13 feet isn't too tall, sounds like one story. I have the same set-up, although my tile flue is smaller. I ran a 6 inch pipe to the top of the chimney through the fireplace. I have excellent draft.

Thanks Dj I was leaning toward the whole liner but wasen't sure if it was needed. Do you run a Dampner,I have always burned wood and the space in the chimney is limited. I would have to set up a remote "choke cable" to operate. One of my buddy's said don't even bother.

If the fireplace is on an inside wall rather than an outside wall then you might get by with only a couple of 2 ft. lengths of pipe into the chimney. If the stove has a bi-metal thermostat to control the air a damper will not be as important.

Yes I run a damper. Sounds like it would be a pain for you to set up a damper, but I feel they are well worth it.

With such a short run on your chimney and the large size of the flue, I'd be worried about not getting enough draft if you didn't run all or at least most of the way up. That part is not hard to do, as long as your chimney is straight..
