Not a bad idea to consider. Once the tongue wt. gets up in the range a load like that presents, the weight on the rear axle from the trailer's tongue weight will begin to show on the lighter tow vehicles. Espceially if you've got a load in the tow vehicle too. Most of the more modern heavier 1/2 ton trucks with a class III hitch can also handle this kind of load but you should know how and why to use a weight distributing hitch (WDH). A WDH will redistribute the weight more evenly above all axels/tires, and keep the rear set from being over loaded and the front axle from floating. :o Also, tow vehicles have a max tow weight that if exceeded by too much could cause extensive wear or failure of driveline parts that might make it take longer to get home!

Dave, it was 4,300 lbs. It was my first coal run. Read all about it here:

Thanks Coalberner

At the time I still had an E-250 company van, which hauled the trailer just fine.

Though I realize this initial post is a couple of years old, it was because of distance of delivery or pickup that I stalled in purchasing a coal stove 7 years ago. I knew I could drive out to Belvidere and purchase bag coal, but at that time didn't have a truck and the price was significantly higher than bulk. I'm pleased to state that Wilson Coal & Supply in Sparta NJ has Bulk Coal for $135 for 1/2 ton pick up or $270/ton pick up. Certainly better than the prices posted by others a couple of years ago. I am looking to purchase a used dump trailer and maybe work out a deal with other locals to drive out to PA and 3-4 tons at a better price, but for now, I could justify a local pickup at the price Wilson is offering.

Hey all! It's funny, I'm getting ready to get my coal and was flipping through the forums and I saw someone replied to my old post from 2010! I found a place in New Egypt called Herman's landscaping and they are 235 a ton picked up. I finally got my pickup truck so I'm in much better shape now then I was in 2010, lol

Hi everyone-my husband and I are getting low on our coal supply which is from our house's previous owner, so we've never bought it ourselves. We don't have a huge area to store it in (two large plastic bins out back) and have a Subaru with an open bed in the back to haul it in. Can you suggest places we can pick up bags in the central jersey area? We are located in Garwood, around 136 off the Parkway. I know there's a place in Sparta but hoping there's somewhere closer we can run to tomorrow morning.

Thanks!!!!!

Or you can go to American Coal in Lafayette and get Kimmel's bagged at $280/ton. 973-862-0079

Have you burned any of Wilson's coal?

Check your local equipment rental houses. One near me rents a 5 ton dump trailer for $100 a day. Sure seems like it would save one's back rather than having to shovel out a uhaul trailer.
