Hi everyone... Soon that time again and I'm am waiting to the last minute to get my stove ready. I have a Harman Magnum Stoker and need new "grate inserts" - part number 4-00-00046D. Mine are all warped and cracked.

The only place I could find that is "somewhat" local to me says it will be about a three months before they can get them in and they cost $85 each. :o

According to the Harman part sheet this is a stocked item... should it take that long? and do these really cost that much?

If anyone has a better supplier... please let me know. I am in S.C. Pa between gettysburg and carlisle.

Thanks for your help,
Trevor

I bought a pair for a mag I was refurbing in 2008 from a Harman dealer and they were $18.00 a piece. I did take about 6-8 weeks. It's ridiculous it takes that long. Part Number is 3-00-00046

I've been having problems with my grates on my Harman Magnum stoker "lifting" on their leading edge. I thought I had a warped grate, and would need to buy new ones. After looking them over closely yesterday, I think the problem has been the buildup of rust and or slag(?) on them. (One grate had a small piece of something that appeared to be melted to it.) I think the rust was enough of a lip, or friction point for the coal to get caught on, and the pusher then began to lift the grates allowing coal to get underneath. I cleaned them with my 4" grinder (I probably should have used a belt sander, maybe next time I shut the stove down I'll do that), and so far the stove is working great. I think the smoother you can make the leading few inches of grate, the less it (the coal) should "bunch up" and get too deep. I was also having problems with coal spilling over the sides of the fire bed before.
Now the coal bed isn't as deep, so that should help the coal to burn more completely, and the stove should be more efficient(?).

Just thought I'd throw that observation out there...

Since I made my last post I had more problems with my grate inserts (on Christmas day!). I removed them and while cleaning them, one broke. I noticed cracking of the cast. They are getting old and weak, and grinding them may have made them weaker (although I didn't grind very much off of them). I was able to weld them together and make them work, but I don't trust them to last.
So I contacted Fisher Stoves and purchased a new set yesterday (12/28/2010) at a price of $72 + tax. The next time I have issues with my old grates, I will be installing the new ones. :)

FYI. Yours may have been Part # 3-00-00046, but here's a picture of the tag that was attached to my new Magnum Stoker grate inserts I purchased from Fisher Stoves...

They are the same. I suspect the difference between the "3" and "4" is just a production run number. I wish I had bought a bunch of them at 18.00 though. I think somebody made a mistake at my Harman dealer on that one. 8-)

...

Just stopped by to read the thread... Great info, thanks for posting for the rest of us Mag Stoker owners to see and be aware of...

Maybe the '4' at the beginning indicates 'revision 4'??? just thinking out loud... Who knows...

It could be a production run number, but evidently it makes them 2x the price...!
Let's hope they last twice as long. I suspect my old grates were originals. Not sure how old this stove is, I bought it used.

If you are wishing you had bought "a bunch of them", does that mean you have replaced them before??
What is the "normal" lifespan of grate inserts? I am a relative novice at burning coal, this being my third winter living with (and loving) my coal stove. :D

Actually no, I'm still using the original grates that cam ewith my boiler. This is their 7th season. But I buy and refurb mag stokers and I usually repalce the grates on those.
