unseasonably warm day in CNY! help needed managing coal usag

PostBy: newHYFIRE2guy On: Tue Oct 26, 2010 9:57 pm

first yr. using coal. it was 75 outside today. and I still went thru half a bag of coal even tho the coal trol FR is at zero all day and the temp is above the desired temp. What do you all do on unseasonably warm days -I am using a hyfire 2 with only one burner going. I hate the idea of burning thru coal on a warm day when the house is hotter than the the thermostat setting.

any help? Thanks -

Turn it off. Start again when it gets cold.

Yeah, turn it off. No use wasting coal. Next year set some milestones that have to be met before your light the match. In our house the interior daytime temp has to drop below 65* and stay there before DK gives me the match. That puts the outside temp at around 45 or 50*. We haven't reached that point yet but we are close. Lisa

YOu can set the MIN down a couple points to slow the idle feed down, but not too low to loose the fire, some have been running at 2 or 3, I think the factory setting is 6. If you are only burning 1 burner, 1/2 bag, about 20#'s in a 24 hours period, is pretty normal.

Not much else you can do except shut it down.

Good call. I am a little leery of messing with Coal-trol min settings. I did lower my max setting because my stove is pretty powerful for my install. Remember everything is based on 100 second intervals for the percentages of values, which is what your feed rate is. So FR of 6 is 6 percent of 100 seconds.

can you explain that like you would to a 4 year old :) I am decent with math most of the time, but I don't get the FR percentage thing.

Any help would be appreciated -Thanks, Josh

Although admirable, your intense desire to remain in the one match club overwhelms practicality in this instance.

You may apply for special dispensation for using two matches per season by citing the supernatural occurrence of the pre-Halloween snowstorm immediately followed by the November heat wave.

However, there are no guarantees that dispensation will be granted and you will be allowed back into the one match club even with an asterisk. Ii has to be unanimous and if you think the Russian and East German Olympic judges used to be tough, they're nothing compared to those lobstah eatin' Mainah's when it comes to weather related issues!!

Geeze guys, with my hand fired Hitzer, I just closed her down yesterday AM & the only under air comes through a 1/4 in. hole I drilled in my thermo. flap. I suspect I've used a half 5 gal. pail since I shut her down & still have a nice bed of red coals to kick er in the ass when needed. I feel for all you girly girls but I can't reach ya. toothy
