Can anyone tell me if this would be a good deal?

PostBy: dehchul9 On: Wed Nov 03, 2010 6:46 pm

There is a wood(might be coal, I'm not sure) stove for sale for $60. Assuming there isn't any cracks, splits, rust, would it be a good deal to purchase or should I keep searching and about how much output(BTUs) do you think is possible for this stove? Should it have some minor rust, would that disqualify it? Also, I'm not sure about the make, whether they produce/produced good quality products or if it is a waste of money. In terms of output, I doubt by its size whether it'd heat a whole house, which I wouldn't need it to, but do you think it'd heat a single floor of a house or a 50 X 20 basement. Any help is appreciated. The only info I have about it is that is says on the front: "Champion No. 122 The Wehrle Co Makers., Newark, Ohio" Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks
Also, here is a picture

Thats a wood stove, no shaker grates, flat bottom you shovel the ash out. Probably not what you are looking for if you want to burn coal..

That is most certainly a wood stove. It is what is called a Six Plate Box Stove, one of the most simple and oldest designs made. If you want a wood stove to heat a small area and you don't mind feeding it constantly it will do. If you want a good antique coal stove, you would want a cylinder stove.

Yes, just a wood stove.

Definately Worth the $60, check this out, you can probably sell it for more, if it is old!

actually if it is what it looks like BUY IT! its valued between 1500 and 1800...

was it made in Royersford pa? does it say glenwood . i have the same one and its only wood burning although i made a neat contraption to bring air under a raised grate and have burned nut coal in it after ligning it with fire brick. wasnt worth it tho works better as a wood burner. 8-)

Yep, a wood burner. If you're looking for a used hand fed coal stove that will heat an entire house check out the classified ads here, there's a nice Alaska Kodiak on there.

I wouldn't give $.59 for it. It's a wood stove and by todays standards, a poor one. If it were for occasional heat in a weekend get-away shack, OK, but other than that I'd keep shopping. You can buy a similar one brand new from Northern tool for less than $200. http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_796_796

Here's what I think it's good for. This one is a foreign replica though. I used to heat my shop with it. You could see the fire through the seams lol.
