I have a piece of 8 round cast set in the middle of my stove(about 7 inches tall) to reduce the size of the firebox for warmer weather . It works great I have the rest of the box coverered with half inch plate steel. I have the plate raised up on legs so that I can use the skaker which also works great.
My question is I get an easy 8 hour burn time at NIGHT only during the day with the same amount of coal same draft settings Its out . I get home from work around the same time frame as my night time burn. In the morning just trow on a shovel and its off to the races.
After work the stove is still warm but the coal is all burned out, its not like it went out because of lack of draft it had no more fuel to burn.
The outside temp is warmer during the day I'm thinking that should slow down my burn if nothing else.
My wife says fill it up and open the windows but I like to experiment and its making me nuts.
Any ideas we could kick around ?

I think your wife is opening up the draft while you are gone at work..
But seriously, do you have a barometric damper installed? It will give more consistant draft, and give you one less variable to the mystery you have..
One other thing: if your house is real tight, then at night it is closed up, nobody coming and going,, but during the day, with a few people leaving and returnig during the day, there may be more air and less restriction for the chimney to pull air through the fire, resulting in faster burning of the coal..

Are you giving it a little shake in the AM before you throw the shovel full on? Could be that you need a little more room for fresh coal in the morning.
My wife promises me shes not touching it but im not sure I can trust her ..
Barometric damper is set on 3 as always My chimney has good draw , I try to shake it down the same and add the same morning and night its enough to make you nuts it should last the day if it last the night .
The door opens a couple times with my kids coming home for lunch but thats it .The house is empty all day
MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Maybe that plate steel over the grates is restricting the draft during the day. The draft can be better or stronger at night. If I am not mistaken Keystoker in thier operating manual shows that by unhooking one of the grates from underneath you would reduce the BTU's from 90,000 to 70,000. This would change the stoves heat output. Maybe this would work on your stove. Check out thier installation instructions for the 70,000 - 90,000 HFH Hopper Stove on thier website.
My 15 year old says of course it burns faster during the day its windy during the day and usually calmer at night ,he might be on to something. That might be the answer since I can t figure anything else out.

I have a 90k keystoker hopper fed stove that I have disabled the rear grate in the fall and spring. What I have found is that disabling the grate was not needed as I can throttle the stove down to a nice simmer using both grates. The only difference in our stoves is the hopper, on simmer I need not even fill the hopper and get a good honest 24 hour burn on just the fire box mounded up and sloping to the front. Or just tell the wife to put a little coal on it during the day, unless you are like me being the all mighty keeper of the flame and all others need not touch my magic heat maker. Hell thats all I am the master of:)
