Coal Trol Testing

Coal Trol Testing

PostBy: Jerry & Karen On: Sat Jun 30, 2007 3:49 pm

We have been doing some summer testing on our stoves. I have found that with the coal trol turned to 4 on the min., we burn about 6oz. of coal per hr. We have turned the min to 3 and burnt just over 4oz per hr. That's a great savings. Burn 24 hrs. on 9lbs of coal. Naturally, the min will vary because of different coal. At our shop we can burn on 3 and hold a fire, at our retail store (different coal) we need the setting at 5 or we will loose the fire.

I use four as the minimum, at three the fire will stay lit sometimes and go out others. the coal trol is a marvelous product in any regard.

I keep my Hyfire I around min. 6 or 7 (8 when really cold). It seems to burn way back up the grate, I don't want to get a hopper fire or anything. I haven't gone below 6. max around 48.

That would work out to 35 to 40 dollars a month depending on coal cost in NY.
Would the supplied heat be enough to heat hot water through the summer months? I think with NYSEG electric it is costing over $50 a month for my 30 gallon tank.

My Alaska stove is set at 3 and I burn about the same amount as coal.

It's a wash for me, we don't use enough hot water to say so, I only have the tank on a Timer for 4 hours a day (electric) and it only runs $20-30/month. I don';t have any place to vent it, that is why it's not gas.

By the time I invest in the DHW Coil, pumps, Copper piping, valves, etc...I would probably have over $500, that 2-3 year payback, but I don't run the stove in the summer.....

If you install an 80 gal. fiberglas holding tank before you water heater, gas, oil, electric you can easily save 15$ or more a month for the rest of your life. I would guess the cost for material around 350 complete. Need plans, Just ask?

If you coal is mined from western PA that would be Bituminous coal Not Anthracite coal .
Only in NEPA will you find Anthracite being mined .Now is he a Anthracite dealer out in western pa if so he is getting it shipped in from NEPA . But if it is being mined out there then it is Bituminous coal /soft coal Not hard Anthracite coal.
