Every time you shake down, before you pull the pan, take the little arm that is used to pull the shaker and use it to clean the grate slits so that air can flow freely upwards.

The chubby has a tendancy to clog the grate and stop air flow. I ran into this today when I tried to restart last nights burnout by dumping hot coals from the other stove into the Chubby.

It just would not light till I cleared the grill slits.

I do the same thing with my Kodiak once a week or so to clear spots that shaking does not clear!

I judge it by how much glow I can see ash pan after I shake it down and use a thin poker that I inherited with one of my other stoves to clear any areas that are clogged up.

SD

That's a good point Smokey, With the new fire pot it isn't so critical as you can shake more and easier without a lot of effort but with the old style pot it's a good idea to use the poker often.

I have the old pot. Larry says to shake 25 times....for me its somewhere between 30 and 40 times. And....sometimes...I have to poke through the bottom for a while to get some nice glow.

Hmmm, maybe mine shakes down so well is because I also have a new grate which came with the stove when I bought it. The new grate has raised ridges along the slots. maybe it shakes up the ashes better. Yeah I shake about 25 times too as Larry suggested.

I do have the new grate though, just not the new pot. Sometimes it shake real easy but sometimes not so much.
