Corntrol

Hi all,

Is it ok to ask Corntrol questions here, or is there a better forum for that? (no coal here in WI, just corn and cheese) I just installed a new LMF furnace w/ Corntrol and have a few setting questions.

Fire away! There is another forum iburncorn that has an LMF section on it. I do monitor it, but prefer the NEPA crowd... Currently, the Corntrol can only be purchased through LMF.

Just so you know what I have here, it's a new LMF 100K furnace. I have it vented with a powervent, burning an 80/20 mixture of corn/pellets. Draft is set at .02, and my air is open to about 1/2 inch at the widest point on the combustion fan. Min is set to 8 and max is 85. Daytime temps are averaging about 35 and nights are about 15-20 right now.

My first question is why does the room air fan come on for 30 seconds and stay off for 90 seconds? This happens even when the thermostat is calling for heat and the pot is burning nicely. Is this normal for this furnace controlled by the Corntrol? Seems like there's a lot of heat available that's not being used.

LMF uses disc type temperature switches in the plenum. About a year ago they changed to a "rod" that had the three temp discs mounted on it. This change was done to allow easier service. Initially, the placement of this rod in the plenum was not optimal, and this caused the blower to cycle excessively. So, I suspect that you may have an earlier unit with a sub-optimal modification. Call LMF and they can give you the details of how to position the probe assembly in the correct location. I'd tell you, but I don't know the details.

Next question...This regards the MAX setting. Other than reducing overshoot on setpoint changes in a well insulated home, are there any other reasons to have it set less than 99? As far as the MIN, I think that the lower you go and keep the fire going would be better for fuel consumption, but is there any fuel savings by running less than 99 MAX?

By avoiding excessive overshooting with the lower MAX setting you are saving fuel, too. It's possible it will also result in some savings by slowing down the response while tracking temperature changes. In a well insulated house this slower response can result in less "flutter" around the setpoint and result in some incremental fuel savings.
