Finally the day has come where I actually own a coal boiler! I've been saving my pennies for a EFM 520 when I saw one advertised for $1200 so I went and bought it. Nice looking unit, well worth the 10 hour round trip drive to the Hazelton. PA area from western NY. Date stamped 1990 so it isn't that old, as far as I can tell it looks like a good one, the guy said it worked great but he was older and didn't want to deal with the ash anymore. The hot water coil is newer. The only thing I can see wrong with it is the base is rusted a bit along the bottom in the corner under where the chimney pipe goes in, a little furnace cement should fix it easily. On a scale of 1-10 with 1 being easy and 10 being impossible I rate this basement removal project a solid 9, maybe 9.5. The boiler is extremely heavy. I don't have a heat exchanger hooked up yet so it won't be fired up for a while. On a side note it rained on my way home and all the soot in the furnace reacted to the water overnight and surface rusted everything, I got it all cleaned up and oiled but holy crap I couldn't believe how quick it started to rust up.

Congrats, you bought a great boiler. The dealer I used to get coal from had one of those. They used it year round for heat and hot water in a commercial building. The dealer said his dad lit it up in'72 and it has been going ever since.

We are waiting for pics. :)

Congrats, Hope you have good luck with it. the best part about heating with a coal boiler/stove is sticking it to the oil companies and giving American money to American coal miners...

e.alleg, Congratulations!! That is a real find. That boiler is still just a 'teenager'! Do you have force air heat or hot water heat in your house?
Ebay often has some pretty good deals on heat exchangers, both water/air and water/water. Search Ebay under 'outdoor wood boiler'. If you don't find what you want I may have some links to other companies.

Dungeon Master, that was a steal ! You will really enjoy using that Mark III. It will even burn that 'reclaimed' butuminous you bring home. :)
