Getting Coal Next Week!

WNY , I read your post on getting coal delivered. I says to myself "WOW" , times really flying. Your right! Next month , things are going to get real busy in the coal business. So , I picked up the phone , called my coal man at home , and ordered 6 ton of chestnut coal. Looks like the HITZER 50-93 is going to do the job again. Will work on installing the hot water heat during the slow months of winter. Was kind of hoping to have the keystoker boiler up and running for this heating season. Just too busy. Should I get the hot water heat installed early winter , the switch can still be made.

I finally got home to see my mountain of coal. This is 29.5 tons of Pea coal.. This coal bin is temporary while I build a bigger 'permanent' bin..

WOW , that is a lot of coal. You can feel the warmth even in a picture.

I bought my second trailer load of pea coal last week directly from the PA breaker. 3.3 tons of pea at $140 a ton. It's a 128 mile one way trip for me. With my previous purchase of 3.7 tons, I'm set for this winter. Thanks J.C. for all the help. As you can see in the photo there is some bagged coal. I used the GregL's suggestion to bag some coal and haul it the pickup. Transfers some weight to the pickup and makes the overall weight balance better. The filled bags serve double duty for me as a "sandbag" style barrier.

I'd rather write a check for 21 ton of coal than it's equivelent of 4200 gals. of heating oil. :shocked!:

This is great! Everyone is starting to stock up! The past 2 years I did the bagged, hauled, unloaded, re-stacked in the basement, etc....at least 3 times (1 ton each load) for around 3 tons.

The bin is much easier! Do it Once and I'm done! The bin is about 10 feet from my stove in the basement.

coal came weds. 44,600 pounds.....1120 pounds water for a weight of 43480 charged for delivery . 21.74 tons. massey held her own going up the bank to dump in the 9 foot high coal bin. now the coal is stuffed through the rafters to the steel roof full of coal. I figure I have about 32-34 ton on hand now, plus the massey oiled it for me from the leaks in the hydrulic system what a very hot day to be working outside though. i'll live here in northeast pa anytime. they can have the south. road the harley to mobil,al and new orleans. this spring. freaken hot.... had a good time though .. just love pa better.... cold and all.

I thought about the disappearing ink on weds. but... I know the old coal breakers used to have connections with the mob.... so I may have become a disappearing person....

My dump trailer will haul 4.2 tons of Crushed Limestone (2 inch and smaller). What would that equate to in Chestnut size Coal? I can't see exactly what size Yanche's trailer is but wonder what his cubic feet is so if necessary I can equate his 3.3 tons to my trailers cubic feet capacity.
I still need someone to tell me where to go in PA to get the best price as I am coming from Wisconsin. I would rather buy it at the source to help out the little guy if possible.

Drujinin, measure your trailer's lengthxwidthxdepth. this will give you cubic feet capacity. Coal is around 40-42 cubic ft. per ton. So if you look at Yanche's trailer, it is approximately 10'x6'x2.5'=150 cubic feet divided by 40 = 3.74 tons.

Coal will settle like round gravel or marbles, so you can't count on much of a mound or peak in the middle, so use the actual dimensions you can measure. You will come real close to the trailers coal capacity.

Check your PMs for some info.

Gary: yep that's the Case 580CK, mid to late 60's vintage I think. It was used to set the concrete blocks in place, ~4000# each. It will be used to move the coal to the newly stacked coal bin in a few weeks.
