I got up a few hours ago, the thermometer on the front porch read 0*.. the first 0* night for the season.
The old, 1849/1890's section of house is now on it's own zone and thermostat.. it's set at 55*.
My master bedroom is at 66*
The main floor of the new section of house is set at 69*, and it holds it perfectly on temp.. I think my digital thermostat must respond +/- .5*.. 'cause I very rarely see a 68* or 70* on the thermometer.
The weather over the last week was pretty cold and windy.. highs in the mid 20's and lows in the teens. The AA burnt less that I remember it burning in similar weather two years ago, before the house rebuild.. I seem to remember burning a whole coal bin full over 5-6 days,, and this last week I have coal remaining in the bin after 7 full days with similar weather..
I wish I had kept better records than my feeble memory..I don't always practice what I preach.
The house is warm, comfortable, and draft free.. I guess that's the goal,
Now I need to get some conservation work done [improve insulation and sealing] in the 40x60 shop. It's only 38* in there this morning. I'm sure I could decrease my coal use for the shop if I spent some time on that project..
Take care everyone,, stay warm.

Insulation? What's insulation?
Heating a circa 1832 farmhouse with a Harman Magnafire Mark I & an EFM 350 (heating DHW).
Yup, now that I heat the shop with a Chubby, I'd like to tighten it up some. First order of business will be to put a better weather strip on the bottom of the garage door, lot air leaking there.LsFarm wrote:Now I need to get some conservation work done [improve insulation and sealing] in the 40x60 shop. BTW Greg, watch your remodel project, hell of a nice job. Like the way you kept the outside facade looking like the original house. Inside is just beautiful too.

The official NWS low was 13* here.. but that thermometer MUST be getting some residual heat from some building, highway, parking lot.. something.. Or else someone is leaving the door to the deepfreezer open in my neighborhood.. LOL
I'm always reading 5* or more colder than the 'official' temp.. but I have zero 'heat island' or residual heat.. It's all woods, swamp and fields around me.. the closest neighbor is 1/4 mile away,, across significant swampland.. so I know I'm not getting any heat from them..
I have checked my porch thermometer [bimetal spring, rotary needle] many times, as well as this morning with a laser handheld thermometer.. I lasered the 4x4 post the thermometer is screwed to. and it read the same.. 0*.. So I'm assuming it's close to correct.

They have a saying around here that has to do with a brass Monkey.
If you have a brass Monkey, check to see if it still has all its' parts.
They say that around 0* bits start falling off.
