I removed medium density fibreboard from my house to install hardwood floors. This stuff is hard to light, I dumped gas on it twice on a pile and would not light. Got some hot paper and embers going in my trash burning brick pile and she really throws a flame  Could there be a fire retardent that was used in the 60's ?

From the 60's? I bet there's all kinds of things in that wood that is no longer used today for one reason or another.
