East Coast Heat Wave

East Coast Heat Wave

PostBy: Yanche On: Thu Aug 09, 2007 10:38 am

We are several days into a triple digit heat wave in the Mid Atlantic region. To bad we can't store it for this winter. :( Wednesday the temperature set a record at 102 (BWI airport) and 105 in Baltimore. There were some brownouts and a 5% voltage reduction. Today (Thursday) the power went off about 9:30 AM. The local electric company's problem reporting telephone number says not to report outages. This usually means a system failure rather than an errant car hitting a pole. I'm running on the generator now. Hopefully the power will come back after the sun sets. The generator is noisy to run. I'll have to run a line to the neighbors so they can get well water. We haven't had measurable rain in over three weeks.

It's been hot here a few days but low 90's at the most. Rain has been sparse but not exactly drought conditions either. 76 currently at 6p.m. Tomorrow's forecast is for high of 77, amazing how much the weather can change in such a short distance.

Yep, I live 2 hours from Baltimore ( in the mountains) and as stated the High at BWI was 102.
It was 82 at my house at the same time. Humid as all get out though.

What time did the power come back? On the central CT shoreline we can go 3-5 days sometimes if there is enough damage. I keep the generator ready to rock and roll for that reason.

It was out for slightly over 4 hours. Then it blinked on and off a couple of times and shut down for another 15 minutes. The electric grid here is usually quite reliable. All of my problems have occurred in summer months. One thing that has helped the reliability is the 30+ year old requirement that all new Maryland residential construction feeds be underground. Keeps the errant tree on private property from falling and taking out an entire neighborhood.

It got up to 72 today here on the hill. It was in the 80's yesterday so I finally was able to sell my air conditioner that I've had no need for since I moved here to Appalachia. It gets hot down in the village but my house is at ~2400 ft. and there isn't any blacktop around so it stays pretty cool.

Yanche, your heat wave is killing me, it was 56* this morning. I'm so cold I'm thinking of firing up my boiler in the middle of August! I spent 2 hours cleaning brown Maple leaves from my pool yesterday. Where is this global warming that is going to kill us? I'm gonna freeze. :x
