Cape Cod Winter Storm SE Mass. 12-26-10

Hope all is well with the forum members from SE Mass.
The snow started around 6:00 PM. 2" on the ground 24* F wind 10-15mph NE. Mid Coast, Maine.
Three Jotul 507's burning Nut @ 450*F/ 75*F inside the old farm house/ 450# per week....

I'm in the western portion of Worcester county. Started snowing early this morning, lightly ... then stopped for a few hours. By 3pm, the real stuff came. Looks like 4" on the ground already ... maybe more. Rain gauge on my weather station has a heater in it to measure snow -- it's reading .22" so far, & climbing by the minute. Lots of snow!! Barometric pressure warning beeper was going off as well, because it dropped more than .25" in an hour.

Just like a hurricane, without the rain & warmth part.

Stove is cranking over 600° right now. Haven't heard the oil burner kick on since I loaded the stove up around 18:00. Several tons of bagged coal in the basement, & the Polaris is all tuned up & ready to plow. I say BRING IT!!

storm is still raging this morning. right now have probably a foot of snow, but is hard to tell because it is drifting. I can see grass in parts of the yard but there is about 4 feet of snow next to the garage. we have not lost power but the generator is ready. right now winds up here on the hill are gusting to about 50 or so but saw reports on the cape of 80 mph gusts.

Blowing like crazy here, only a few inches of snow late last night. The old man is pissed because it blew all the snow off the driveway and now he has no reason to fire up the new snow blower.

just got up out plowing till midnite another 9" on the ground this morn wish i had a remote starter on this truck!!!

Looks like a scene out of Star Wars here in central NJ. Ran the snowblower for a couple hours starting at 10:30 last night! Only broke one shear pin. I couldn't find the supply I got last year! Just found a metric bolt and jammed a 1/4-20 nut on it. The machine did not let me down, despite the damn gravel driveway. Gotta go deal with the town snowplow berms, me exhausted...

I did appreciate the beauty of nature, the fresh driven snow, the way the wind carrys it around buildings, bare ground at the corner of my place, and drifted to 3 feet in front of the coal shed!

Lost a tall pine tree last night with all the wind blowing. That sucker was at least 100 feet tall (about time it came down). When I can I'll take out the tape measure and see for sure.

One good thing is where the tree landed is that it landed along the edge of the lawn and not on the garage. Now all I have to do is limb it and leave it. And about thirty years from now the stump will be gone.

Yeah saw that on the news .. that's insane the difference just 70 miles makes in MA.

After all was said & done, we didn't get anywhere near what they had forecast. Stuff is blowing around like hell today ... but I don't think we got much more than 6" ... but the drifting & blowing is causing issues on the roads around here. Did some plowing with the Polaris, but that took about 10 minutes tops.

Thought we were gonna lose the antenna on the house today, with the 35 mph gust we had. Didn't sound too good from in here. No, it's not hooked up. I saved it in case I ever get HD .... another project I'll probably never get to.

Temps started off at the height of the storm around 24°. Baro pressure dropped bigtime -- down to 28. 9 something ... like a hurricane, as I said before. Now pressure is on the upswing, & temps have been steadily declining throughout the day. Now down to 17.7°, average wind around 6 mph .. as it's been all day. Getting some bigger gusts now that the sun is setting. Ended up with .45" of precipitation with this one. Light & fluffy stuff due to the colder temps. Bright orange sunset with blue skies right now.

At 8:00 PM, we still have heavy gusts & snow falling ...22*F.... About 10" so far. The manometer has jumped to over -1.6 WC today. The barometric damper is set @ -.05. The wind is blowing like a bitch out of the North East 25-40mph ! We still are waiting for the plow truck to hit our driveway.
I hope all the forum members are safe and warm...All three Jotuls burning @ 425*F.

All due respect to the Mass. thread, this is getting reports from all over!

Nice pics Smitty. I'm happy I got this whole place cleared, even made a path for the vermin deer and their ticks to get to the corn the landlady feeds them.

Wind continued very gusty all day, the CABLE and INTERNET were out for a couple hours, I was pacing around like a heroin addict!!!! I fell to my last resort, I read a book!

On The Cape 20 miles makes a difference...
