I know this has been answered before but I cant find it, so how many sq.feet does one ton of hard coal take up?

approx. 40 cubic ft. per ton (give or take).

ex) 4' x 4' x 4' = 64 Ft3 / 40 (ft3/ton) = 1.6 ton.

Take your total bin size in Feet (L x W X H) / 40.

Oopse, I have it in my head 43 :bang: The 3 extra cu.' can go towards wood chips. :lol:

Always good to error on the PLUS side, and make it a tad bigger, just incase your dealer throws a little extra on or not quite exact.

thanks everyone. 40 was in my mind but I needed to know for sure. want to start work on the new 5 ton coal bin

Coalrunner,

Here are pics of my outdoor bin : COAL BIN Pics

I just had it filled with 5 tons of rice. It actually will hold 6 tons but that would require some shoveling to fill the corners and under the stationary part of the roof.

ETA: My pics are about 2/3 way down the page.
