Oil on Coal

Hey, a few of my co workers were talking and wanted to know what kind of oil they use to put on coal if you ask for it. Thanks in advance. Dan

I think its a very light mineral oil..I always get mine oiled. It's like $5-10/ton extra, but worth it, no dust.

here's one thread...I know it's been talked about a couple times.

How do you oil coal in your bin as you fill the bin?

I've got roughly 50 gallons of used motor oil if you need it.

well all kidding aside ive thought of sprayin my drain oil on as i filled my bin, just not sure what would happen when it went in the stove????

I watched a delivery driver oil his load at the braker once. he poured light oil from a gal jug all over the top of the mound of oil in the truck. Seemed like a gimmick but maybe other guys use a gun a spray it evenly.

I get coal from uae harmony mine they do not sell oiled coal , they will sell you the oil $8.00 per gallon they said it is a mineral oil, the oil has no smell until you burn it. I use about half gallon per ton, spray oil on with garden sprayer as they load you

Actually that should work pretty good. When I took range (nut and pea mixed) I loaded nut on the bottom and pea on the top. It would mix as it exited the truck. The same thing would happen with the oil, you'd get a mixing action coating a lot of it. Seems like one gallon wouldn't go that far though.

I am pretty sure that the oil used is mineral oil. If you use something like motor oil, and you use too much, the stoker mechanism can get jammed. I have a hand sprayer filled with water and I water down my coal every week to keep the dust down.

My neighbor has a drip line set up on his wood stove that feeds used motor oil to the fire.
I know when he's using it because it freakin' stinks!
