Her's my take on it.... The difference between the Dan Holohan and the John Siegenthaler books are the Holohan books are written to the level of the lowest common denominator, the wrench monkey. They are cook book recipes, approximate rules of thumb. What you learn is of little use when the job is out of the ordinary. They are witty amusing reading to entertain the grunts. The Siegenthaler books on the other hand teach physics and engineering principles as applied to hydronic systems. What you learn can be applied to jobs out of the ordinary. Which is better? It depends on what you are trying to achieve both personally and as an employer. If what you want is another education patch to sew on a tradesman uniform attend the Holohan seminars. Those that attend will always have a job because they are better than the true wrench monkeys. But those with the more in-depth knowledge provided by Siegenthaler will be the boss. Sure the Siegenthaler books are more difficult, but for those that master the subject they will be able to do more, much more.

And I now offer my apologies for being 'brusque' earlier in the thread. I did not understand what you trying to convey.

The quote I pulled from the book was a clarifying statement for me, as it gets to the heart of my situation. This house has been running well for 60 some years, but that's not a guarantee that it can't run better. I'll be interested to see what the theory is and how that was applied to my home, and this will certainly prepare me to better deal with the installers.
