How much coal have you burned so far

I was curious as to how much coal burned today ,so far this year. Well did a tally in the log book and counted 9300 lbs so far this winter making it 4.5 tons, as I have a full hopper of coal. Not bad this winter, even though the weather was milder than normal in far northern Maine.

We're at about the same for coal burned Dan. As far as it being milder this year..........we're only about 90 heating degree days warmer than last year. That's not much.

Been keeping daily records for 2 years now on a certified scale.

For a whopping difference of 746 lbs.
Not much but what is noticeable is the $1248 in fuel oil savings it has provided over the cost of the coal.

We just purchased our first coal stove 10/15/11 and fired her up on 10/29/11. As of today 2/29/12 we have used 2.5 tons and hopefully the 1/2 ton leftover will last us the rest of the winter.

Much less than in years' past. Very strange Winter this year. Wondering if we'll get some sort of freak blizzard this Spring.

Yup. I also remember hunting for Easter eggs in the snow. And watching Crocuses come up and thinking that Spring was here, only to have them get crushed with snow. I cannot, however, ever recall having a winter with this little snow in my area. My daughter wanted to have a sled-riding party this year for her birthday (Feb 16th) and was crushed when she couldn't. Would have turned into a dead-grass riding party. I can't even have coal delivered since my coal guy has to drive through both of my neighbors' yards. The ground isn't frozen and he'll make a mess of them, which they generally frown upon

Wonder what this summer's going to turn out like.

Last year I bought 4 tons Reading rice and started the fire on November 20. By the end of March, that had been burned, so I bought a ton of Blaschak. Of that, I used about a dozen bags before I let the fire go out in April. I used the coal furnace this heating season on and off throughout the fall, it being so mild, and by about mid-December finished the last of the 5th ton I bought in the spring. I bought another 4 tons of Blaschak in December, and have used it steady since then. Around the end of February, I started in on my second pallet. I've got a little better than 1 1/2 pallets of coal left to go, which should last me through the end of the heating season and hopefully get me started next fall.

We had a weird white out off & on testerday evening & for the first time I noticed I had a lower pasture full of Robins. Hmmm, they looked fat & pissed. I've got 3/4 ton left from my traditional 3 Ton delivery for the season so I guess I'm burning a bit less--BUT--the fat lady has not sung yet, time will tell.

From start-up on Oct 14th, I'm down 7,150 lbs. to date. About 3.6 tons burned. Averaging 48 lbs./day overall.

PS: Still envying Freetown Fred's meagre consumption.

Last week I decided to quit keeping track of the total btu's flowing in and out of our "complex". Between the coal, kerosene, electric, and LP it is a scarey number.

Rob, I believe that my boiler would have gone through 6 full tons to date if it was heating your house.

Here is how I figured that.

Starting assumptions:
My house: 2,500 sq-ft (including heated basement). Your house: 3,500 sq-ft (including heated basement)
My area has ~6,300 heating degree days on average. Your area has ~7,500 heating degree days on average.
My coal consumption to date = 3.6 tons

3.6 tons x 7,500/6,300 x 3,500/2,500 = 6 tons

That is about where I'm at...somewhere between 5.5-6 tons. I'm still keeping track of the coal, but the Kerosene and LP receipts were giving me heartburn.

I got off easy this season. Last season, 4.5 tons here in Massachusetts. This year, I had 2.5 tons left over to start with, figured I'd need more by late January or so. I never got any more, shut down last Wednesday, and STILL have about 500 pounds left! Talk about a strange winter...

EDIT: and one more thing, this was the best coal I've had in the 3 seasons I've burned coal! Unfortunately, my dealer never tells anyone where they got it. Sometimes it's good stuff, sometimes, more ash, more clinkers, less heat.

Stove still running. Only 48 for a high so far today. I have burned about 3 & 3/4 tons so far. Burned about 4 &1/4 ton last year. Started each year on Nov.15th.
