Getting ready for some of the coldest temperatures in a long while here. Low teens tonight and Sunday night a low of 4 degrees. That is very cold for coastal NJ. My Vigilant II is cranking baby!!! Love my Kimmels coal!!!

Good morning Freddie, Fred, et al. I did a double-take at the porch mounted thermometer this morning,, it's been a long time since it read '"9-O'Clock'" That's -15* F !!. The 'official' NWS temperature was -3*.. I'm always a lot colder than the 'official' temp.

I have a truck coming over this morning to fix a leak.. it's been planned for weeks.. so naturally it's a near-record low... The combination lock on the shop door wouldn't work 'cause of the cold.. I had to use a BBQ lighter and warm it up till I could get it to open and let me into the shop. I fired up the waste-oil heater, the floor was still 50*, but the air temp in there was only 28*.. the big waste oil burner will make it a toasty 45* in an hour or two. Thankfully the truck will be driven here, so it will have a warm engine, which will radiate heat on us while we fix the transmision leak, this way is much easier to work with than all -10* steel and aluminum.

The house is a toasty 69*, the bedroom 67* and the old section of the house at 58*. no need to heat unused space. I checked on the AA while I was out, the ashpan told the tale: more coal burned than a 'normal' overnight period.. but that's no surprise..

I was in Newark when that snowstorm came through.. Friday morning I had 4-5" of snow on the plane at the gate.. looked like a big popsicle with wings.. AS we were being deiced [sprayed down with heated glycol] the clouds broke, and the snow moved on north.. We had 5+ miles visibility when we took off. When I returned Friday afternoon, the wind was howling from the northwest,, right at maximum Crosswind limitations for the plane and runway.. but the landing went well. If the wind had been any higher, I'd have had to divert to JFK.. Glad I didn't have to make that decision.

Last night and this morning, there was a big, almost full moon,, crystal clear sky.. no wonder it's so cold.. !! I haven't seen a barn cat, squirrel or bird yet.. they are smart enough to stay in bed !!

I think I'm gonna make some oatmeal for B'fst.. I've been eating too well at the hotel the last three nights.. I need to back off a bit..

Take care everyone..

Greg L
