8 tooth coal feed on an EFM 520

8 tooth coal feed on an EFM 520

PostBy: winter clove inn On: Sat Jan 22, 2011 2:00 pm

My EFM 520 burns great with a coal setting of 6 and air at 5 1/4. I have tried to raise it higher to an 8 or 10 tooth feed ,and regardless of air settings 6 to 8 ,a lot of unburnt coal spills into the ash bin. When you look in at the fire pot there is a 2 to3 inch wide line of unburnt coal flowing into the ash bin. The flow is always in 7 o'clock position. All the air holes in the pot are clean. The unit is 1 month old.Coal feed pipe is cold. Thanks, Bud

Is the clean-out cover on the bottom of the pot fully closed? Is the lever pushed all the way back? It doesn't seem that any of the plates are broken or blocked, but check again. Do you pull the clean-out lever fully open while the motor is running each day or so? Are there undumped fines in the bottom of the pot?

Look at the vanes on the fan blade in the stoker through the side opening. Is the fan blade turning in a counterclockwise direction?

How old is the worm? Are there any sharp edges on the worm in the area of the bottom of the pot?

I checked everything you suggested and it all looks fine, but unburnt coal still spills over.Could it be an air adjustment ? I was also wondering if it could be the position of the worm relative to the pot.The end of the worm is about 1/2 inch short of the center line of the pot.
Thanks,Bud

Interesting.

I don't know where the auger ends inside the pot, but I'm sure someone does. When you say it's brand new, do you mean it's a 2010 model? Your problem is unusual since everything else checks out.

Open the ash door and look up at the bottom of the burn pot. Maybe the bottom plate is warped. Or there could be a build up of fines. :)

I looked in the ash pit ,no fines and the opens closes and fits perfectly. Has anyone fired a 520 for an extended time with a coal feed greater than 6 teeth? Thanks, Bud

Yes, at efm, we burned 11 teeth all winter long for 9 tons
There's something that you're missing somewhere.

Is the pot level or tipped toward the front? :)

If it's new, you should have it checked out as possible warranty.
