This is the coldest it has been since I installed my stove(chubby). Right now it is 9 bone chilling degrees and expected to drop down to negative digits by morning. The inside of my 1500sqft cape is a comfy 74° :D . I can not believe I haven't used one drop of oil this year! The stove is chugging along at 575°, we'll see how she is in the morning!

Good night,
Jim

Good morning all:

It is 6:35 A.M. and the outside temp is -35 with a slight wind. This is the first test of the Chubby in conjunction with the Jotul. The Chubby is running at 600F and the Jotul is running at 500F. All 2500 sq. ft. of my house is 73F. This is the first time I have pushed the Chubby to this temp. The Chubby seems to be dumping a lot of heat up my chimney even with the MPD fully closed. The stack temp on the Jotul is a lot cooler than the Chubby and the Jotul only has a baro, no MPD. Both chimney's have a baro. I did notice it appears that 550 F is the starting point of negative return for the Chubby. I mean the ratio of coal consumption to heat production starts to fall. For my Jotul's it seems the start point of negative return is around 800 F. I know I constantly point out the negative aspects of the Chubby, however, considering the market and function Larry designed the Chubby to perform at, the Chubby is performing well. I hope everyone is staying warm. I hear on the radio there are locations around my area who have lost power. Not a good time for national grid to have power loss issues. For those without power I hope power is restored soon and hopefully they either have a wood stove or a hand fed coal stove. I wish I had a base burner to test in this nice cold snap.

Cold here too, relatively speaking, zero this morning, the coldest I have seen on Cape Cod in 18 years I lived here! Chubby is keeping up fine, running around 550 or so. Doing three shakes a day though instead of 2. After consulting with Larry, not afraid (concerning the stove) to run it at any temperature. It seems to like to settle in its own groove and likes to run hotter when it is colder outside, probably because of the increased draft. I have sealed off my baro as I do not like it or ned it. No furnace running!

Well at 7:30 when I got up the chubby was at 600° the house was at 70° and it was 0° outside. Just before I went to bed I shook it down and added coal...she did well! It's 8:35 and the temp for everything are still the same...I to am shaking three times a day. It will eat up some coal with the temps like this, but much better than oil!

Well here we go again! I guess tonight isn't suppose to be quite as cold, but now I'm almost sure my stove can keep up with anything southern new england can kick up. :D

Snowman,

I need to get a thermometer on my base heater for the chimney. I think the point of negative return might be close to the Jotul, but I'd put it down a bit, more like 725 to 750. I don't really know though without a second thermometer. I wish you had a base heater to try out, I'd really like to see how you would rate it. Of course, I've always wanted a Jotul! I'd be very happy doing that test from here also!

Hey, how much snow you got up there? We don't have a lot, but it sure is cold...for us, but then you know cold...

I know I'm glad I'm not heating with oil as I believe the price around my area is about $3.20 a gallon.

This morning it was -8 in the hill country around Delanson, NY. It was so cold my gloves stiffened up while I was still wearing them and the bananas I brought for a snack partially froze in the car on the way to work.

I have seen it as low as -29 in Watertown, NY. My father told me it was -40 in Olean, NY when he was a kid.
