Looking for a laser thermometer...any suggestions?

PostBy: I'm On Fire On: Tue Jan 25, 2011 7:00 pm

Up until now I've been using my companies laser thermometer. It only goes up to 600* and then after that it gives me an error. I know some of you guys are using ones that go into the thousands of degrees. Any you recommend? Where can I buy one? How much is it gonna cost me?

The "Actron CP7876 Non-contact Infrared Thermometer with Laser Pointer" goes up to 932 degrees F., and is under $50 on Amazon.com.

Thanks. I appreciate it.

I have a Harbor Freight within an hour of me, and I pass it often enough I could probably swing by there one day this week, provided it doesn't snow.

I have this one: KINTREX IRT0421 Non-Contact Infrared Thermometer with Laser Targeting
Works pretty good.

It's pretty much the same as the other one mentioned, main difference is the other one is 10:1 (slightly better) and this one is 12:1.

A couple yrs back I got one on eBay for abut $25. It goes to 1,200*F. Cheap, but works well!

IOF, be aware of not only the temperature range but also the ratio. Check oros35's link. 12:1 vs 10:1 is better. Distance in inches : Measured Diameter in inches per. A 10:1 at 10" will report an average reading on a 1" circle. Not too bad as far as a reasonably priced unit goes. Also, look for NIST certification. Sometimes you'll find both a narrow ratio and NIST cert. for a good price.
Edit - got this backwards in my post and have corrected it based on the following - been a while  I copied this quote from oros35's link
With a 12:1 distance to target ratio, the thermometer measures smaller surface areas at greater distances.

I got this one for ~$55 w/shipping a few years ago.

I bought mine at Northern Tool ... but this particular model has been discontinued. 8:1 ratio, & it reads up to 1000°F.

Here's another similarly priced one, though it only goes to 752°: http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/ ... _200395566

Yeah, I still haven't bought one yet. Some other things came up that I had to pay for first. :(
