Not sure how well this will show up, but this is what I found when I first bought that '89 Blazer the wifey's drivin' this winter. Oil was thicker than molasses ... and about 5 quarts overfilled! :eek2:

Oh, Smitty! You didn't change that oil did you!? The older Blazers lived on that stuff! You can't run that thin new oil in those, they need the properly aged thick oil to keep everything from leaking all over. The higher level is done so the air filter get's a nice coating and does a better job at keeping the milkweed from friggin' up the whole engine. Geepers! I thought you knew all this! ;)

SMITTY,you didn't know about the milk weed theory? I'm surprised at YOU! OK off to NAPA soon--1 NAPA 21060 oil filter--5 qts 10W-30--might go lighter if I get adventurous. I hope I don't scare the old girl to death. Of course it's 6* & I hope I can beat this lake effect they're talking about this AM--got my drain pan & filter wrench on yhe seat--can't be that much left in her so it shouldn't take too long to get this done--YES, also have big screw driver & hammer in case the filter's froze up--won't be any trouble punching through the filter if needed  I'll take notes & get back to you guys :) Smitty, that dipstick looks good from here ;)

 x 2

When I first changed that sludge oil, I dumped in a mixture of synthetics I had in a jug ... a little Amsoil, Castrol .. and maybe 4 other brands of 5W-30, just to flush all that crap out. I wish I had remembered to take a pic of the oil filter! :o There were solid carbon chunks all around the top. Basically it was a few miles away from plugging up solid. But yeah .. just running on 5W-30 it would rap at idle. Got a nice cheap batch of 20W-50 from Wal-Mart. $10 for 5 quarts - can't beat that. And the rap is no more. 8-)

Doesn't pour too well below 30° though!

Still burns a quart every 50 miles or so. I'll fix that in the summer with the Jimmy engine ........ oh, don't worry -- all electronics on that engine are going in the trash.

Just got done plowing & nothing blew up or out--Sooo, I guess we're good for another 8 yrs  I think the 5-30 will be OK--I just plow w/ the old girl & it gives me easier starting I guess--

I’m late but two day old unrefrigerated leftovers are better than ex-lax and even cheaper. Another week ahead and another trip to New England to watch the snow, I’m excited. We have been lucky here at home because all those storms were too far east and we may get a lot of the warm side of this new one, we have to wait and see but for now we have 4 – 6 inches on the ground.

Topic of the week seems to be motor oil. I too like the synthetic stuff because I like to change oil once a year weather it is needed or not. I usually do it the day before my yearly bath so as not to get dirty right away after the yearly bath ritual. SMITTY; you should just collect used oil to run through that oil burner you got there. There used to be a local fellow would collect used oil to put in his old worn out trucks that had the old 2 cycle Detroits in them. Those things loved to leak and burn oil, no need to change it just replace the filter now and then. I used to love the smoke you could make in the morning when you hit the road after a night of idling, ah but along come the greeny weenies and the rest is history.

As far as the snow blower debate goes, I once heard someone say if you have a weak mind and a strong back pick up a shovel. I run the snow blower and I let the wife operate the shovel, with my supervision of course. :D

Have a wonderful week. :)

Thanks for the tip! (see video below ... heh heh heh! )

The Ariens got some fresh rubber last night, & a relocated chute crank to get around that shiny new blue Harbor Freight Greyhound engine there. Passed the test with flying colors today. Sucker was tossin' snow 40 feet in the air! :punk:

New location for chute crank. You can see the old location -- that hole to the right was where the right side bolted up before.

I live just off the NE tip of Lake Ontario. We've been getting about an inch of snow each day for several days in a row. I've been shoveling that much just for the excercise. Today the blizzard from the midwest is supposed to reach us. Right now at 4:13 am the wind is blowing at about 15mph. and we are getting a moderate snowfall. We are supposed to get up to 18" of snow today, but sometimes right where I am we get less than the forcasted amount.

I will probably fire up the old Honda snowblower after it stops snowing tomorrow.
I have had my Honda about 20 years. The 8hp motor on it has been great. The rest of the snowblower has not been so great. It has the tracks instead of wheel and is a bear just to turn. I can't pull it backwards without using the reverse, and that is a real granny gear. The various break downs I have had have all been small things I was able to easily fix. I keep threatening to get rid of it, but the quick starting smooth running motor keeps me from dumping it. Oh, it also feezes up behind the impeller under certain snow/temp conditions.

My brother-in-laws Honda lawn tractor has been the same way with good motor and PIA everything else. I takes minimum 3 hours to change from mower deck to snowblower and vice versa. He ended up leaving the mower deck on and just buying a walk behind snow blower.

I blow my mother's driveway with her 5hp el-cheapo yard man. I love it. It cost 1/3 what the Honda did and is much easier to use and has been very reliable.

Honda got out of the lawn equipment business a few years ago.
