Had some trouble getting rice coal recently in upstate NY

It's not uncommon to see the supply get drained September/Oct and this time of the year especially if you have very cold weather like we've had. A lot of the breakers just shut down when it gets down in the low teens. They can still run but it takes them half a day to get things going which isn't very productive. Lots of people getting their second load locally end of January.

From March 2006: coal shortage???

When it gets low if you don't have a contract or very good business relationship you aren't getting any coal. Funny side story, the rice was going as fast as they could make it the one year. A guy came in for 1 ton of rice on his pickup and the weightmaster told him they didn't have any. I knowthis because I was waiting for him to go so I could pay for the five ton of rice on my truck.

Exactly, in addition to getting it the product is generally cleaner and a usually a bit cheaper.

I was at a an ACE Hardware store that just opened up this past week. It was in Clarks Summit just north of the Scranton, Pa. area.
They had a skid of KImmels bagged rice coal outside selling for $7 plus a bag. Not sure if all the Ace stores would carry it, but just
thought I'd mention it.

5 ton of coal is less then $800 where i live. what would you do if you had to spend 3 times as much on heating oil ? not buy any and let the house freeze? I'm confused. make a bin, 6ft x 8ft x 4ft high, store it in there.

I offered credit when I was doing business, ask your dealer. A lot are going to be reluctant to offer credit but they are being short sighted. Nearly everyone eventually paid but I'd only offer credit to repeat customers that I felt comfortable with. This worked out for me because I didn't have to go to same house twice or three times. If I had customers getting small loads I'd even suggest it to them. If they paid it off quickly they made out because it was summer price and I offered a better price for full truck load, if not they ended up paying some late fees and it would average out to same thing as small loads in most cases. Delivering whole truck loads to one house maximized the profits, you can put 5 ton into a house in almost the same time you can put 2 ton into most places. Setup and break down takes some time and when you're running split loads it will greatly increase the amount of time required to offload a truck load.

Tomorrow I have my supplier bringing 3 T--my yearly ration--I probably have enough to finish up this season, but, his bulk prices for Blaschak Nut is still at $230.00 a T--same as last years--sooooo, I figure I better get it while the gettin is good--who knows what's going to happen down the pike price wise hopefully nothing price wise Anyway--I'll be set for next season

I have never had a problem getting coal in Albany NY area or reasonably close by in 30 years. I always keep my eye on sources and try to netwok with as many interested parties as I can, and that was way before finding this forum last summer. This forum is like a "Coal Ebay". Richard should rename it as such, just a suggestion Maybe have an open spot for folks in trouble, and listed as such, maybe even a category on the home page."Coal Supply Critical" listing. Times are changing.

Yeah, well 5 ton of coal is over $1300 + tax if I wanted it delivered around here. Instead it pick it up 1000 pounds at a time here and there. Then I can just keep a pile of bags near the stove and not have to take up my whole basement or try to cover them outside. I see why buying bulk in advance works for you, not sure why it's so confusing to buy it here and there though. Also not sure what this has to do with heating oil.

Anyway, my regular supplier seems to be doing good again. The small place is getting some in next week, but seems to be a bit harder for them. I have called around and found many different options, some in stock now some not.

WOW over 260@ton? I can drive 15 min and pick coal up for 200 bulk or drive 30 min and pick it up for 220 bagged. And I cant be far from you.

I don't know the rules about advertising on the forum so I hope I don't break them, but.... GTS coal in Jamesville, NY has bagged coal from stockton anthracite at $230 a ton picked up and $250 delivered. Dutch the bagged I have been getting is from Warner's, but if they are putting a limit on people that may not help. I actually got mine this summer for $215@ton.
The bulk is down near Naticoke. They still had a bunch last I heard but I think it may only be rice.
