Driving Directions please

PostBy: Rick 386 On: Tue Feb 08, 2011 4:57 pm

Fellow forum members,

It is once again time for us PA boys to head north to Maine for some snowmobiling. we are leaving Wed. Feb 9th and coming home Monday the 14th. Sorry I can't bring any coal along with me but the 4 sled enclosed Worthington trailer is already loaded up with 4 sleds, about 60 gallons of gas, a case or 2 of oil, liquid refreshments, etc.

I have a question on what would be the best route through your lovely state.

Mapquest wants me to come across NY state via I-84 from Newburgh NY and across 84 all the way to I-691E, then to I-91N where we will join I-84 again.
Does that sound OK or should we just stay on I-84 all the way ??

691 is the old Rt 66 and it runs east, not sure why they said to use it. 84 runs into 91 in HTFD, from there you can chose 91 N or 84E. I would just run straight up 84 to HTFD and chose your poison from there, 691 appears to be a waste of time.

Thanks. That's what I thought but I figured there might be another reason.

I would guess that taking 691 would add at least 15 minutes to your HTFD arrival VS just staying on 84.

Rick, I agree with the 'Straight to Hartford on I-84. Remember to avoid the damned rush hour if you can, it's slow going around Hartford any time past 2:30. You guys headed to VT, NH, or Canada? Snow is the best in 10 years, and believe it or not, the frost heaves aren't so bad that you will need GPS to crawl out of them :!: ;)
Bring some good sunglasses, it is blinding at 85 mph on a white lake trail. Enjoy the time away, bring lots of cash, it has been waaaay too slow up here!

Try to not buy fuel in Conn, their prices are WAAAAAY above the 'genitalia of a Giraffe' :!: 3.45 for diesel in NH and VT

The old rt 6 and rt 44 are nice sightseeing back roads but not designed for the quick ride...

I don't know where you are in relation to CT or MA...If you are W of CT I would just jump on rt 95...if you are W of MA, why not take the MA pike, rt 90, strait across the state and the hook up to 495, then 95 N ? The pike is real easy driving...

If your taking 91 N from Hartford, the next choke point is the south side of Springfield. That's about 25 minutes from HTFD.

If the destination is Maine...
84 to the mass pike, 495 then on to 95 north...
