Insulate the basement walls...
With the money that would be spent on the metal chimney...
Warm floors and saved coal...
The cold floors are not worth the move...

I agree insulate the basement walls, and forget the chimney. No offense to anyone but those stainless chimneys look like garbage. If I were looking to buy a house that would be a big strike against it(but thats just me). Now an insulated basement that might be a plus. I think you would miss the warm floors. and like others have stated I don't think you would save much coal to justify the expense.

Perhaps along with the insulated basement walls you could look for additional areas to install floor registers and allow a little more heat upstairs. But you won't do any better than having warm, draft-free floors. Can your basement be converted into additional living space? If so, once you have the walls insulated you're half-way there.

My set up is similar to yours, stove in unfinished / uninsulated basement, nice warm floors upstairs. I had thought of moving mine upstairs also, but decided against it. I figured the first day I did it would be the day I dropped the ash pan and sent a cloud through the house and then I'd have to hear about it for the next 5 years.

Besides, I can store about 30 5gal buckets down there and have the coal handy. All brought in during good weather through an outside entrance to the basement so I never slog through rain or snow bringing coal in or ash out through the finished living space. Good place for the snow boots & play clothes to dry out also without worrying about the floor getting wet.

Also provides an escape room having it down there!! :D I head down saying I have to tend the stove when all I do is sit in peace and quiet and watch the blue flames. I'll even take the laptop down with me and through the wonders of wireless connect to the forum for a while without being asked what I'm doing!
