Anyone ever spot one of these when you were out and about? I've seen a few mostly white deer in a couple of the local herds over the years. Someone just sent me this link to t a Wisconsin Public Television video from Wisconsin. It's about a herd that's coddled because of their albinism but it has some really good shots. I have to admit it startles you more than spotting the usual coloration approaching when you're posted at your stand. You get use to the adrenalin rush but not when you spot something like this. It's like having a flock of hooded mergansers drop in on your set here in NJ when the weather is so cold everything should be iced in.

Outstanding post--a couple hills over from me there are 2 white deer in a herd of a dozen or so--they don't appear,to me,to be as white or of the albino strain, but, the are definetly white--as fawns, they had quite a bit of brown mixed in but as they matured they became white--pretty neat to watch the progress--and yes, they are hard to spot now, but, still run with the brown ones yep, outstanding post

I've only seen one. That was in Franklin W.Va many years ago
There's suppose to be a big population in New York state somewhere.
A buddy of mine sent me the video but I must have deleted it.

Where I hunt at a friends place there are pieball deer, 1/2 white and brown. He took a buck years ago and said their is a distinct bump between the nose and eyes that only the pieball have. He reminded the taxidermist to add the bump ,but forgot. Case of bad genetic blood line. It is claimed if you shoot a white deer, 1 you will not live long, 2 you may never see another deer to shoot. I can say my friend is alive and well and see's his share of deer.

I know the difference with the pink eyes and ears in the albino, but yes, alot think if it is white, it's albino. Most of the deer you see are pieball(pie=bald). IMO,it is a birth defect, too close in the jean pool, still neat to see. The ones I have seen are 1/2 & 1/2, makes them stand out like a soar thumb.freetown fred wrote:Don't confuse pie=bald with white deer

Something about when the white buffalo is born, they'll be major changes taking place.
Makes you wonder when you look at what's going on in the world.

I've seen one albino deer in my life. Maybe 15 yrs ago now. Perhaps 150 feet from me. He/she stayed while I stopped the car & backed up. A beautiful sight! Wish I had a camera.

Are you near maxatanwee, that is where I have seen a couple of the pieball ?4tees wrote:My backyard deer herd has a mostly white deer.
IIRC there is a herd of about 300 of them in the old Army Depot in Romulus NY on the NE end of Seneca Lake. I think its a mix of albino and pie-bald. I have seen a few now and again when passing by on my way to Mays Point to fish for catfish in the canal next to Montezuma Wildlife Refuge.
