I remember hearing about someone that did their own bbq pig, their was a company that supplied a smoker roticery and the pig gutted on the spit ready to go on a trailer.

This thing belonged to a friend of a friend and we borrowed it for a week or so... Worked awesome... I built the stainless stack pipes with dampers as there were no stacks at all when we got it here... Looked awesome huffin' smoke like an old Mack truck with a juiced up pump!!!

If I remember correct the spit was of solid 1" stainless round stock and the tines were also of stainless... I think the spit itself had a keyway the entire length and the tines were just keyed shaft collars with 1/4" stainless round stock welded to the collar then going out and away maybe 4" either direction from center then a 90* bend on each with about another 4" after the bend and sharpened to a point... 4 each of these per collar and obviously 2 collars, one at each end of the hog... Worked like a champ...

Is that an old oil tank? I know some people who have made them smokers and grills...never knew if they were strong enough to hold a pig?!

Our body is 90% water, heavier than oil, but consider how much 275 gallons of oil weighs

Yeah, oil tanks are pretty stout. Consider that many of them spend decades outside or underground ... and only a few rust & leak. Most are at least 1/4" thick steel.

When the wifey & I got married in our yard several years back, my buddy brought his oil tank spit. His was just an oil tank cut in half with a bicycle chain & sprocket setup connected to an electric motor to turn the rotisserie. A couple pieces of square stock welded to the bottom formed the support for that. Could handle a 500 lb. pig if there were such a thing. 8-)

Had to look it up, oil goes around 7 lbs. a gallon, water 8.3 , 1925 lbs. for a 275 gallon oil tank= the godzilla of pigs.
