Should I do it !!!!!

PostBy: AA130FIREMAN On: Tue Feb 22, 2011 11:15 am

I have a neighbor that I would like to get rid of :chop: But not like that  He has dumped 40 dump truck loads of soil and ROCK against my land. There was always rocks in my yard (he mows them with the lawn mower)and it looks like h*ll to see the 8 ' bank on a 60 degree pitch with constant soil errosion. I am thinking of installing bamboo. Bamboo is invasive and will grow all ways, (don't care if it spreads to him it's just the other neibors that I want to protect) If I dig down 3 feet and install a barrier it will stop the spread. I was thinking of 55 gallon barrels but would need larger in diameter and cheep of free to find.

I know how it is. The dead end street here was quiet for 30 years or more. 7 houses on the street. Then the people up the street got divorced and the lady, who is a spanish teacher, sold her place to portugese ghetto liquor store owners. The first day they got here they were walking up the street like they owned it. Then one of them took his 71 Datsun 240Z and was spinning the whole car around in circles at the corner. I got out of my car and walked up to him, (I was in front of the guy) and said "WTF are you doing? This isn't the CITY". Shortly after that one of our garden statues was stolen.
Then the house next to this property got sold, to their relatives. That property was the same for 30 years, the old German guy had passed away. He was an amazing machinist and had a nice shop in their detached garage. We would always say hello to his wife on her daily walks. The new people's relatives immediately started converting the garage to living space for their other relatives. The town shut them down until they got permits for everything. Then they got a big barking dog, that went on all year. The next year, year before last, the guy starts cutting all the trees down on the property, and he brought in a bulldozer and started grading the property at 7:00AM every day. Then he brought in dozens of dumptruck loads of fill, sometimes 5 a day. A guy from the planning board came by and told him he needed permits for that. He gave him a break and told him no more than three more loads of topsoil. The guy just kept bringing in more anyway.
Right from the get-go, all kinds of strange cars started coming up the once quiet and peaceful street, a few of them per day. And they would leave almost immediately. I think the guy is a drug dealer.
There goes the neighborhood. Do I sound racist? I don't care if they're purple, they disrespected the neighborhood from the get-go.
I would love to put in a lot of bamboo in a few places here. I'm not even getting into the other neighbors who have the big McMansion on the other side. Ok yes I am, they used to start blasting old rock music from their house speakers every weekend. I sent the owner an anonymous letter with the Township noise ordinance last year in desparation, told them they were disturbing the peace. They're NYC Manhattan types that only come out here on the weekends. That did the trick , I hope...

Be careful with the bamboo! My neighbors planted some so that they didn't have to see my kids on the trampoline in the my backyard and it started to take over my yard. I ended up digging an 18 inch deep trench and putting some fiberglass roofing panels I got at HD in it to act as a barrier. The fiber glass panels stick out of the ground by about 2 inches. The article I read said you should fill the trench with cement but that was too expensive. My barrier has worked very well. It's about 30 ft long. The bamboo tries to sneak around the barrier but I can control that with round out. The thing to remember about bamboo is it will grow underground for great distances before emerging and developing a new patch of the stuff. It will go under a driveway. You have to watch it constantly in the growing season and it is very hard to dig up as the roots intertwine, sort of like the Borg from Star Trek. My neighbor's new hobby is trying to keep the bamboo from taking over his yard. He has told me he regrets ever putting it in. I'd say think long and hard before planting it. Lisa

Bamboo! When I was a kid my neighbors had a small patch. Maybe 4 feet round. They decided to cut it down before it took over. Two or three times a year they cut it off level to the ground. I'll bet it was ten years before it finally stopped growing.

Neighbors are always a crap shoot. You could have the nicest people imaginable living next door for 20 years, then the house gets sold to someone you can't stand. In your case I would recommend a hedge for privacy. The bamboo idea just sounds like the start of a "war".

p.s. I had no idea Bamboo would grow in the Northeast.

In most states moveing the property pins is unlawfull and you could probably have the local juristiction force him to pay to have the property surveyed and new pins installed! Would teach him a lesson for sure!

As far as growing in the NE, I see bamboo patches all over as I drive through Lancaster and York counties in PA. Those patches look extremely healthy. They are so thick you couldn't pick a path through them to walk through.

Regarding the piles of dirt....He'd have the Save the Bay folks all over him in this area. They really control any silt or fertilizer runoff into the Ches. Bay. Because we're fairly close to the river and in a "sensitive" high impact area, he'd have to have a permit, a silt fence, the mounds at a particularly shallow angle which would be measured by a county storm water management employee and a re-growth plan to keep the soil from eroding. All the planning would take at least 3 months of review before approval would be considered.

I'd also have him pay for the re-survey since he move the pins.

Some links to the former Organic Gardner Editor-in-Chief's answers to bamboo questions. Mike has a weekly gardening program and I've heard him talk, or should I say warn, about bamboo.

After I told the neighbor nicely about dumping the dirt on my property, the next night when it was dark he started dumping bricks around the pins. I know where the others were cemented in and I measured to confirm they were moved. I had talked to the state police, said it was a civil matter. I moved the bricks with my plow and the pins where they were. I overlooked when he installed underground fence , and other things. This was where I drew the line. IT'S just like stealing in my eyes. The state police didn't seem to think so. Taking something that is not yours ???

Of coarse he did not pull the skid steer by that tree(not that he didn't try  ), but he killed the tree and cut it down himself, that was another form of entertainment. He didn't notch it hard enough, the tree settled and the saw was stuck. He ended up takind the tree down with wedges, he ran around like a monkey chasing his tail. I laughed on that one too    I thought for shure it was going on the house, the wind blows that way.
