Another Registration & License FEE!! Bicycles!!

I don't think it's a bad idea at all--of course us that live in the REAL country kinda get screwed as usual,but,cities have bike lanes & a bunch of things geared to bike riders that cost alot of money. Guess who's been paying for all that?? that's right--you & me--I don't ride no friggin bicycle Let some of them tree huggers pay for it, they use it -----------new black market item----bicycle registration stickers

I am with you Fred. Bicyclers use the same roads we do, and most do so without any insurance. I know two people that had bicyclers ride in front of them, or actually ran into another car...and the only person insured was the vehicle driver.

I also see plenty of bicyclers running stop signs...how come the "blue 'n gold" never gives chase to those guys? I almost ran over someone last summer because they rode right through an intersection.

I suspect that someone finally got smart due to all them thar messenger service bicycle outfits in NYC & I suspect other big cities in NY--every little bit helps--& at least this one makes more sense then a bunch of others I've seen thrown out there

I think you hit the nail on the head with the messenger service riders, Pittsburgh had a ton of them, most likely still do, I had a run in with one years ago, he was on the sidewalk & people were jumping out of the way. Clumsy old me I couldn`t get my elboy out of the way fast enough then trying to be a nice guy & help him up I accidentally stepped on his spokes, just wasn`t my day. Still don`t know what all the clapping & cheering was about, I just gave up on helping the guy & left.

This is an unfair assault on illegal immigrants who haven't obtained their false licences and registrations and fake insurance papers and inspection stickers yet. It's also an unfair assault on adult males who lost their licenses for tenth offense .4 breathalyzer tests. Somebody call the ACLU.

I gotta go now ~ $75 to renew registration my 1991 GMC. I better put $100 worth in the gas tank too, every day I wait is another 10 cents more/gal. Maybe I'll have enough left over to change my oil at $3/qt. At least they still let me operate it.

They talked about that last year here in Maine. I wrote a letter to the editor that got printed... I suggested they don't forget skis, snowshoes, roller skates, foot powered scooters, swim fins, and of course sneakers. Come on people! Where does it stop?? I'll tell you where.... if it doesn't have a motor it doesn't need a license plate. Sheesh! That's bull about "needing it to identify people". 99.9% of people carry ID on them as it is. Insurance? When you are using skis, snowshoes, roller skates, foot powered scooters, swim fins, and of course sneakers you are responsible as it is. We need the cities & state getting money from us also? Let them pass this & it won't be long before they tax your shoes & I don't want to hear any complaints when they do!!!

My bike was stolen some 20 years ago - without the registration I would have never gotten it back

You might be on to something there Freddy & not even realize it, just think of the revenue possibilities. Every time sombody publicly complains about anything BAM a $1/per complaint. When I was a kid we had a cus jar at a gas station, every time someone uttered a swear word they had to put in a dime. Every summer we had a big cookout behind the station.

There's some good arguments here for the licensing but they also want to require they get them inspected, that's just money maker plain and simple.

What I don't like about this at all is you're now placing another burden on parents if their kids ride bikes. Perhaps an exemption for kids.

I doubt that -- MA kids are forced to wear helmets & other protective gear to ride a bicycle. Nanny state at it's finest. I used to ride mine all over town .. sometimes 12 miles in one direction at age 10 in a tee shirt & shorts. If I crashed, I'd scab up & heal. Big deal. I'm still here after about 10K miles of pedaling unprotected.

They're just doing what dems do best -- fleecing the populace. I think NY is going to surpass MA, & win the crown for "the worst state to live in".

I think it should be limited to any bikes that are used for commercial use like delivery services. Trouble is if Gov. makes a buck on it soon it will be on everything.
Smitty, are you sure your OK? I kind of think the helmit thing is the right idea for kids, just think a kid steals a bike in the projects, crashes during the get a way & busts open his skull. (I know but even their skulls will bust if done right) Pretty soon the tax payer is footing the bill for the rehab of someone that never had more than half a brain to begin with & the welfare mama & lawyer are sueing the legal owner of the bike for not leaving the proper safety equipment where it could have been put on before the theft.
I`m still POed because if I carry my kayak out my back yard & put it in the back waters there will be some warden there checking for registrations.

I spent my childhood in Cedar Rapids, IA and the bikes all were registered with the police there. It was only a dollar and the police used the opportunity to teach a few rules of the road and bike safety. They engraved a unique number on the pedal cylinder so if it was stolen you could get it back. No one thought anything of it. Then we moved to GA and no one cared. That police department always had a huge unclaimed property auction each spring. I think that auction brought in a lot more then the registration fee ever did; maybe that's why no one cared in the first place. Lisa
