hi,
you might try Hocon Hearth House in Torrington 860 626 0900. there most recent ad (out today) lists coal @ #275/ton but doesn't specify size.
Good luck! and let us know how you make out.

try Phelps&Son in Vernon. He delivers in the Hartford area for the price he charges per ton, 1.5 -2 ton min I believe. I know he will go up to the state line in Enfield, thats a good 17-18 miles or so... He seem pretty honet and he tries to get good bulk that does not have many fines from what he has said to me.

Hocon does carry rice coal, I got some there last year but I won't buy anything there ever again. He really put the screws to me on a stove I bought from him. Good luck!

I buy my rice from Back to Basics in Terryville/Thomaston. He usually always has it on hand.

The dealer told me that my Alaskan 140 would be perfect for heating my garage workshop, which I am sure if the local codes would allow me to do so it would. When I went to my building dept. to pull a permit I was told no can do in a garage workshop set up. I went to the state and was told the same thing. I went back to the dealer and he refused to take the unit back because it was over 30 days. I bought it on his recommendation and now he says too damn bad! Needless to say I won't be buying anything from him and I will tell anyone who wants to listen the same story!

any reason given for why you cannot put in garage? Gas storage issues maybe? Do you store gas in the garage or cars where you wish to use? Maybe you can agree not to store gas in the garage when the unit is in operation.....

The Fire Marshall and insurance company would be that reason, no flame in a garage. You can put it in a garage if it has a separate room and has a rated firewall.

Maybe you could build a small "room" for it and then blow the heat out from the room .. alot of hassle ... so people in CT cannot put in a gas garage heater then either. Its weird..my stove is 5 feet from the garage & it does not have fireproof wall in between...

Bummer. Looks like you may have a small claims case against the seller ... for a hundred bucks? I would try that route to get them to take it back.

Or take the garage door down and put a barn door up. :)

Coaledsweat and David are correct, I can build a small room to house the unit but I would have to have access only from the outside to get into that room. The problem is that the garage is built into a hill, the area where the unit would go is underground. I can remove the garage doors so it will qualify but I have to put in barn doors that are small enough to prohibit a car from getting into the garage. These options have been explored and dismissed as I need it to be a garage for my 2 trucks Jeep and work van. Nope I have to go another way! I could also take the dealer to small claims court but I would rather try to sell it on here and take a little less then be tied up in court over the issue.
