Text Message Retrievial and SIM Card Reader

A friend of mine had her T-Mobile cell phone formatted by the vendor without her knowing it. In the process her text messages and contacts etc were all deleted. Now I think with the proper program/application and a SIM card reader I should be able to help her out and get this data back for her, right?

So do any of you tech wizards have a place to point me to to get a program and what is a good SIM card reader?
