I have been burning coal since the mid 70's. I have only had airtight stoves. I have never used a manual damper or barometric damper. I always used a cap on the chimney. All air is adjusted from the bottom and I do not use any secondary air when burning. I only use secondary air when loading to prevent puff backs until I get steady blue flame on top of the bed. I heat my whole house with about 3 ton a year.I have used 125 forty pound bags to date. I use either pea or nut coal and never any wood.
This season I started on October 21st and will probably go until some time in April depending on the weather. :D
