Well the first part is now over. I have found a shop to move my business into. :dancing: Met the owner and realtor tonight. We have a handshake deal on the price and terms, etc. I'm just waiting for the formal rental agreement to be sent to me.

Main issue is that I will be moving approx. 10 miles away. And that may be an issue for retaining the current customer base. However I believe that
I am moving into a relatively untapped market. So the possibility is there to create a new following. Funny thing is the owner told me that he thinks that my Dad had painted his car years and years ago. Evidently it was a good job or I never would have got the place. :D

Main problem and actually the hardest part will be removing 50+ years of "stuff" from the old shop. Of course I believe a lot will end up in the dumpster. But I think I will retain enough valuable items for one hell of an E Bay auction. Just looking at the walls I see a lot of old OEM stripe tapes kits. Most will have 1 panel missing from the box but the rest will be there. Anyone need some of the old woodgrain decal from the Dodge Caravans or Grand Cherokees?? I think the boxes say from 1990.

I also have a bunch of cosmetically damaged aluminum wheels. These were damaged in collisions. Most were just scratched or may have some gouges in them. Structually they are fine. Too valuable for just scrap value.

I will be out of the old shop by April 30th. The next month will be busy to say the least. But the Holy Grail is that I get to take the Hyfire II with me !!!!

Rick

The wheels are worth 17 - 24 bucks each as clean scrap around here - well that was last year and I hear $ is up again but havn't hauled anything since fall.

Congrats on the move

A 20 yard dumpster will be your friend

OR

leave it in a pile in the corner for the butt that took the building from ya

Well my most recent addition to the collection is a set of 2 for a Toyota Highlander valued at $ 541.33 new. Worth more than 17.00 scrap for sure.

New owner is a victim of circumstance. Not too much animosity toward him.........It wasn't his fault.

Actually it was probably a blessing for me. At least that is my outlook and now everything is my own and everything good or bad is all on me. And I do remember who helped and who didn't.........

Think a 20 yarder will be big enough ???

Lots of communication to your old customers should help, so they will know where to find you when they need you again. Leave some business cards with the new owner of your old location so he can pass them on when when folks ask, "Where the hell did Rick go?"

Glad to hear you found another shop. That was pretty short notice to move a business. I would think nothing of driving 10 miles to frequent a business I had had a good experience with. You'll do fine. ;)

30 yarder is better. Just don't go to WM unless you have deep pockets ( I no longer work there :D ).

Good deal Rick - glad it's all working out for you. I helped move the roofing company I used to work for back in the 90's. Talk about a royal pain in the ass .... but I seem to recall the owners not doing much except barking orders at us while we were doing all the heavy lifting. And they said it was a "tough" move ...

I've been selling all kinds of stuff on eBay for years. Great way to clean out your shop, although it can be time consuming.

Good luck! I've noticed that a 30 yd dumpster fills up faster than a glass of milk. Got any 1985 Jeep CJ7 grey/brown metallic enamel laying around? I loved that color.... :)

Good thing I live far away or I would be planning to rummage through that dumpster!

Interesting quote, are you indicating some folks intentionally damage there vehicles in order to come for dent & paint repair? And does the new neighborhood have plenty of women drivers? :P

All joking aside, good luck, a big move is always difficult.

Well I ain't no Joey Buttafuko (sp?) but I can hold my own. Maybe they will come in to see the Hyfire II ?? It is a nice looking unit !!!!

And all scantilly clad women are welcome to stop by...... Maybe I can make some avatars like Sting ??

I'm excited and apprehensive at the same time. It is a fickle business...... But it will get my best shot.

And ain't computers great, pretty easy to come up with a customer list to send out notices about the move.

And Dann, enamel went out years ago, I could put together some nice base coat color if you need some.....You really aren't that far away, you and any member are free to come by and dumpster dive all you want. If you get here early enough you may even still find it on a shelf !!!!

So the realtor was supposed to send me the lease documents as early as last Wednesday night right after our last meeting with the realtor and owner. In fact he said since he had everything in his iPad it wouldn't be an issue to send them that night. Well I don't get them Thursday so I email him stating so. Finally get them Friday late morning.

I've got some issues with some of the boiler plate clauses in it so I email him for clarification Friday @ 1:00 PM. No friggin reply all weekend. No reply to emails, nor any reply to phone messages on office and cell number. And the owner had told me that as soon as the documents were signed, I would gain accesss to the building so I can paint walls, clean up as necessary and start the long moving process.

If I don't hear from the realtor by noon Monday, the owner will be getting a call on his cell. Maybe the realtor isn't making enough on this deal ???
And I just lost a good weekend to start the process...... :mad3: :bang: :taz:

Hey Rick, best of luck on the new shop. Loyal customers will drive the 10 or more miles.

Hell, I drive 36 miles to my Dentist, 14 miles to my Family Doctor and 56 miles to my
Orthopedic Surgeon,(until he put an office in my hometown because he had a following).

If they like your work, they will follow you.
