1917 Coal Miners First Aid "Alcohol Poisoning"

1917 Coal Miners First Aid "Alcohol Poisoning"

PostBy: Barnzy On: Sun Mar 27, 2011 5:08 pm

While being off work recovering from a total knee replacement, I had time to look through some
antique junk I collected over the years.
Came across a 1917 Advanced First Aid For Miners Book. While reading through it, there were pages
for treating Miners with Alcoholic Poisoning and treating Carbolic Acid Poisoning.
Enlarge the scans and read the treatments.
For Carbolic Acid, if they had no liquor for you to drink (whisky, brandy, etc.) they would have you
ingest SOAP SUDS and apply HOT BRICKS to the extremities.
Happy I was not a miner in them days. By todays standards, this book is CRUDE.

I had a Union rules and wage booklet from the early 20s from the Buck Run mine where my Grandfather worked. I sold it and have been kicking myself ever since. It gave the wage scale for every job in that mine. All were only a few dollars a day.

I had that same book, but gave it to a local collector friend on mine.
I got these books in a complete, intact, hand made tool-box (complete with all tools) that must have belonged to
a coal company Cabinet Maker or Carpenter in the 20's.
Till this day, I did not have the heart to break up the collection, or use any of the tools, except for
giving awaw the Rule Book. Also wish I had it back.
Will try to post pics of box & tools on the Vintage Tools post.
