Harman Magnum and Combustion Fan

Harman Magnum and Combustion Fan

PostBy: heatwithcoal On: Mon Oct 08, 2007 12:53 am

So I have have been setting up my Harman Magnum in my basement (with help from everyone here). I am sitting back watching the Yankees/Indians playoff, drinking a few Long Trail IPA's firing up my stove with my newly installed fresh-air inlet and checking my draft with manometer. I am getting only .020-.025 and fire is barely going while I was pushing 3 dots. What is going on? I read all the suggestions on this forum for this case and just thinking something is not right? Is it my chimney? I removed the newly-installed fresh air inlet, adjusted the slider on the combustion fan, stirred the hopper(maybe a bridge?) everything. How about pushing the combustion fan all the way into the slot, doh!! Just an FYI to anybody scratching their head all night.

I now have the correct draft reading at .04!!! This stove kicks it!!!!

Goodnight all

Mark

I ended up bending the corner tab on mine to keep it from working out while running. Last year I came out into the garage to find fire out, after a little inspection noticed the combustion fan was on the floor! :o

The simple things get ya every time.

Double check that the slide that covers the cleanout port on the bottom of the stoker assembly is in the closed position. This is the piece that rotates to uncover an opening in the bottom of the stoker to let ash fall out. If its open, most of your air supply will go out the bottom instead of through the coal bed.

You will probably want to run the combustion blower full time, contrary to what Harman tell you to do. It makes a big difference in how complete the burning of the coal will be. On low fire, you can have as little as a 1" ribbon of fire on the grate.

Good Luck

Thanks Bill. I actually pulled that slide off and straightened it out last week. It had a slight arc to it and it was not sitting flush to the bottom of the stoker assembly allowing some air to escape. I did this after viewing a post on this site. :)

What a great site!!!

I can't wait for the cold so I can see what this stove will really do. :)

Hi Mark,

Regardless of the series outcome at least you will be able to smile about the money you are saving and how warm the house is. This is going to be a season of many people wishing they were not paying the high price of burning those "other" fossil fuels.

I do feel good about the sox tonight with Beckett pitching.

I am glad I stopped writing $375-$450 monthly checks to the electric company a few years back to heat my house. :)

Are the blowers on the Magnum designed to handle being on full time? Does anyone have experience with these blowers giving out on them?

To tell how tough your motor is look at the data plate on it. If it says continuous duty, it can run all the time. There is another code on the plate called service factor, or SF. It can be as low as .75 (pretty bad) to as high as 1.25 (a premium efficiency motor). Around 1.0 they are pretty good motors.
