Got Another Virus Yesterday

PostBy: sterling40man On: Thu Apr 14, 2011 12:36 am

Got another Trojan virus yesterday. Got to keep rebooting the damn computer everytime I get on! Same thing happened about a year ago. Cost me $100 to fix it. I have the AVG free version and it works pretty good. It caught the virus but I can't do anything with it. AVG won't remove it. I'm thinking of buying Norton. Do you guys know of any free virus removal tool out there that will work til I get Norton? I downloaded one which said was free and ran it. It found 16 Trojans! When I clicked on the "remove infected" tab, it told me that I had to purchase it. . Any ideas?

Depending on what you downloaded this could be as bad as anything else.

What does AVG identify it as?

The same thing happened to me. No worries to anyone here - I'm on a different computer. The I got is the Anti-Virus 2011 virus start up screen. That's what it says you have to download in order to protect your computer. It also opens a tab that read Hello Kitty 4. Actually it shut my machine down about a month ago and cost me about $100 to get it fixed. I had to have the CPU wiped. All was well until I used my thumb nail drive to retrieve some word documents and that reinfected it. It seems that our virus program, Trend micro security, doesn't pick up off a thumb nail drive. My husband ran a Trojan Hunter and found that the infected coding was hiding in the "word" administer program. Thankfully, I have not sent any word documents out since before I reinfected my computer. Hopefully, that stopped me from spreading this mess. Anyway, it's back to the Staples Computer Lab for me this morning and I threw the flash drive away. Good Luck, Lisa

I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials instead of AVG and I'm pretty pleased with it. It is available for XP, Vista & 7. Make sure you get it from a reliable source; I use http://www.filehippo.com
To clean your computer once infected you can try using one of the bootable CD's with AV tools installed (usually referred to as a rescue CD).
Here are some tutorials. I believe AVG has one as well. I try to image the drive before I use any of the tools just in case.

A word of caution about these fake anti-virus programs. They can come from infected advertising placed on legitimate sites. It usually starts as a pop up window saying 'you are infected' and are prompted to 'click here'. It is a fast moving pop-up and the aim is to make you act quickly. You are not infected till you click on 'click here'. Your best bet is to just close all programs using task manager (Ctl Alt Delete) and then doing a full scan. If the pop-up offers yes and no options, keep in mind no doesn't really have to mean no. Just force everything to close.

My husband found this to remove the XP Security Center Trojan. He is going to try it with the "Anti-Virus 2011 or Windows Advanced Security Center" Trojan on my machine.

This link is broken, either the page no longer exists or there is some other issue like a typo.
.

He doesn't know if it will work but if it does it saves us from having to wipe the hard drive - again - and some $100 bucks. Lisa

The chances of you transferring virus to someone else is really impossible, there is really only way it get through and that would be through uploaded file. Images wouldn't do it but Word documents which I hesitantly allow would. The person would have to download it and open it.

The way a site like this gets infected with anything is someone hacks into the server, it would have to be on purpose.

For the future immunity to spyware and virus try this.
http://www.sandboxie.com/

A sandboxed web browser can install nothing and can write nothing to the registry.
Every once in a while clean out the sandbox. Then IE or firefox will be back to the way it was at the point you started using Sandboxie.

If you really want to download/install software and setting from the Internet, there will be the Icon to run your web browser outside the sandbox.

This works. 3 years for my 16 year old without having to debug/rebuild his computer.

Spybot S&D is an excellent program for removing lots of problems.
http://www.safer-networking.org/

The best thing to do when stuck in a spyware/virus installation cycle is to press the power button on your computer. Then do a system restore to at least a week ago even if you don't think the installation of the malware was successful. In most cases this will fix your machine.

I tried it with no luck. Called a friend who fixes PC's and he told me that I'll have to bring it in to get fixed. Oh well, there goes another $50-$100! Thanks for the pointers guys.

I'm back!........but not with the PC......with my laptop that I haven't used in about 6 years. It still works! At least the wife will be able to check her e-mail and pay the bills. Thanks for the suggestions on how to fix it. I'm just not computer savy enough to do it myself I guess. I'll let you guys know what the cost was to repair. Thanks guys. :)

This pc was getting messed up so I am pc savvy enough to re-install XP. I have two 20gig hard drives in it, so I just saved what files I thought I needed to the second hard drive. I forgot to save my favorites list but that's too bad now. I found a program on download.com that writes zeros to the hard drive- clean slate. Then set the bios to boot from cd, and let XP format the hd and re0install XP. Then go to windows update and let it install the updates. Then the task of installing all the software like Word, Excel, etc. Takes a few hours but it is always interesting.
That's what I do. I won't ever use Norton again. Resource hog. I have Malwarebytes in here now, had AVG and Avast previously. They all miss certain glitches. I had one of the annoying Windows Virus# viruses, found a way to remove it on download.com too, you find the key in the registry and delete it!

I wasn't worried about this site, what happened with me was I re-infected my computer when I downloaded some infected files from my flash drive. It was imbedded on a word document I had saved the last time my computer had a virus a couple of weeks ago. I am really worried about any emails I sent out over Outlook but fortunately, I don't send many of those now that everyone is on facebook. The guy at the Staples said there is about a 20% chance of doing that Lisa

The guy at Staples tried to set my clock back to the last time it automatically backed up before the trojan horse but it didn't work. He is now trying a trojan hunter software but he is not hopeful. If that fails we are looking at $100 to wipe the hard drive - again. I threw my flash drive away. Staples offers a security software that they garuntee; if you get a virus while on this software, they will remove it free. It's expensive $90 bucks a year but since I'm already at $200 in virus killing in the last 2 months, that is looking more and more like a better deal. Lisa
