N.J. town limits chicken hookups

HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey town has adopted an ordinance that regulates when chickens and roosters can hook up in backyard henhouses.
Roosters must show they're disease-free and they better not crow about their conquests.
Hopewell Township residents can have up to a half-dozen hens on half-acre lots. Roosters would be allowed only 10 days a year for fertilization purposes.
Mature roosters are not allowed because they're too noisy. Any roosters that crow too long can be banned from the property for two years.
Mayor Jim Burd told The Times of Trenton the ordinance is a compromise between today's lifestyle and the township's agricultural history.

NC

Asheville, NC. Must have permit, must keep chickens 100ft. from neighboring households, chickens must be penned, the enclosure inspected by the City, and droppings must be "collected and sealed in a container."
Black Mountain, NC. There are no laws specifically prohibiting chickens, but do not let your chickens smell, keep roosters, wander at large, or otherwise bother neighbors.
Charlotte, NC. A permit is required to maintain domestic fowl. The premises must first be inspected for cleanliness and space requirements, and the permit cost is $40 annually.
Durham, NC. Up to 10 female chickens allowed in city backyards. Birds can be no closer than 15 ft. from your property line and you must get permits which regulate your coop location and construction.
Franklinton, NC. People are currently (2011) trying to assemble other chicken-fanciers in the town who would like to see the town ordinance for keeping chickens on one’s own personal property changed.
Warrenton, NC, All living including living with chickens expressly forbidden. Chicken inspectors are allowed to peep into bedroom windows to ensure all sexual activity is conventional and must be preceded by bible readings at all times.

Which just proves my point--ain't nothin sacred anymore--damn inspectors--they tried doing the same thing with sheep up here, but after realizing how long the winters are & how lonely a man can get out here, it seems to have gone away--did I mention that I'm on our Town Board. :secret:  toothy--and of course Bible readings continue to be mandated ;)

The county just south of us recently passed an ordinance allowing people to keep chickens on their 1 acre or more lots. The area has a lot of immigrants - legal and illegal - who were keeping them anyway. The county used the raising food prices to justify the move. The ordinance is very clear and precise about waste management, coop location and noise. There are to be no adult roosters. I don't know how this is going to play out because this is a suburban area and there are very few homes on more that 1 acre lots. Those that are around are McMansions and not likely to keep chickens anyway. I think what will happen is that life will go on as before unless someone complains loud and often. Personally, the cost of chicken will have to go a lot high before I'd consider keeping them. My dad always had chickens while I was growing up and they were more mess than I want to deal with. Take care, Lisa

This winter a I spent three weeks in Ocala, Florida on a 7 acre horse farm (cheap rent while I was sorting out some family business). He had chickens to keep the bugs down as the place used to be overrun with cockroaches. I was in an apt over a garage and spent 10 days with 7 roosters and 100 chickens. The roosters were unbelievable starting at 3AM. I hate govt controls but I soon found out why the beautiful appt was so cheap - you have to live it to know - sorry DVC but this needs controlling.

An interesting choice but you will cook good down there in the summer. No Whistle, Asheville is not a special place to move to, I know it well, owned a company down there. Bilderberg Manor is a special place if I could afford to buy it and the town is pretty but it's all about the trust funders. Preppy, horrible and very expensive. I had an opportunity to buy there at a reasonable cost but ran back to Chester. Now this part of the world is full of peasants but as I come from a long line of inconsequentials and I feel at home. Now the Black Forest area..... :D

We keep chickens and roosters. I liken the noise they make to living next to the traintracks or the subway. After a while, you really don't notice the noise. If you ever developed a taste for fresh eggs, you wouldn't eat the 6-week old ones from the supermarket. I like to stop at the diners when I'm on the road. I had to stop eating them over easy because they tasted so nasty. You could taste the "oldness". I did enjoy entering my flock in the county fair though. It's always good to win the "best cock in the county" purple ribbon. Then they print your name in the local newspaper. My phone was ringing for weeks

Stoker, I agree about the taste of the eggs. Hmm, interesting, pray tell me, what subway line is Malta on? I gotta catch me that train.
