What does a full T/L of bulk anthracite look like?

And how big are the trucks? If I go that rout, I need to know if I can get the truck down my driveway and onto my concrete pad at the back of the house. Pictures would be great.

I have coal!

The trucks are Approximately 40 tons (loaded) and almost 70 feet long; you better have a firm, level area to dump with no power lines close by.

I should have mentioned that in Ohio the maximum legal road limit for a truck is 80,000 lbs. Assuming the empty truck to weigh about 32,000 lbs, that leaves a maximum of about 48,000 lbs. for the load. 46,000 lbs. to be safe.

You are probably saying the same thing by mentioning 80,000 lbs., but I just want to be sure.

PA is 80K also, and they have no sense of humor about 'heavy loads'. so it is unlikely that you would ever see much more than 23 tons net. For all those out there with info on this topic, please DON'T share any 'hawg tales' even though we all know a few.

As good as these guys are, they still need plenty of room to turn, and a stable platform to dump on.(always look for overhead obstructions, especially power lines, big branches. etc. A tri-axle is MUCH easier and safer in tight quarters, so look at that as an option also. They can carry 23 tons also in most cases. ;)

What does a tri-axle look like, and how much room is required for one of those? I think that would be my only remaining full T/L option.

Same as a ten wheeler, but with an additional weight carrying axle in front of the duals. Much shorter turning radius, however there weight is more concentrated, obviously.

Can a fully loaded tri-axle truck make the roughly 325 mile one way journey to my neck of Ohio, or are they more in the line of short distance haulers?

Check out the sideboard height, that is the difference between a gravel Tri-axle and a Coal Tri-axle. Additional height equals greater payload.

It might be a bit tight, but I think a good driver could squeeze a tri-axle into my place.

A few years ago I tried to find a tri-axle coal delivery truck and couldn't. All I could find is trailers, which would not fit in my driveway. A tri-axle coal truck is special, with high side boards. It has to have these side boards to get the coal volume in. You need the greater volume because coal density is less than stone which is what most truck volume vs. weight is sized for. Neither I or Penn Coal sales could find a coal tri-axle truck licensed for both PA and MD. Most of these special volume vs. weight trucks only operate in the owners home state. They don't want to pay the license fees to operate in multiple states. That tractor trailer operators do have licenses for multiple states.

That will be your biggest challenge. Finding one that can do it.

I see a niche market here; unfortunately more guys have gone broke buying a truck than have made money.
