My stoker boiler burns rice but I need electricity to run it and the circulators. Im looking for a stove which is designed for rice coal but which requires no electricity in case of an extended power outage where fuel for my generator would be unavailable due to no power at the fuel pumps. I put in an extra chimney just for this purpose when I built the house thinking a woodstove for nonelectric backup. Now that I've read about the great things people say about their coal stoves, it dawned on me that having 10 tons of rice in the bin makes me a good candidate for a coal stove. The question is which stove does a nice job with rice without using electricity. I have a large area to heat. I would apppreciate any advice you may have.

I am not aware of any hand-fired stove that burns rice. You might be able to get buckwheat to burn in a hand-fed if you have excellent draft, but I think it would be a very frustrating experience with rice.

Have you considered a generator to keep the lights on and the EFM burning?

Normally most stoves that use RICE coal, need an aux. combustion fan to get the air to flow thru the coal. Thats why the Hand fed use larger coal to keep the air flowing and keeps the fire burning.

You could get a battery bank backup/inverter or generator.
