I'm making good progress toward getting it in. So far I have removed a wall, removed the old oil boiler, relocated my back-up electric resistance boiler, and relocated my electric hot water tank in order to clear the way for the coal boiler and have things in the right places for it. I'm just about ready to move the 900 lb. (dry weight) beast. It looks like I'll need to rent an engine puller to lift it up and move it into position.

My heating bill with coal this coming winter should be about 62% less than it would be with heating oil, and about 40% less than with electricity (though that's only because I currently get a special "all electric home" rate, and if I was at the Ohio state average rate for electiicity, then coal would also be about 62-63% less than electricity for me).

The 'PUCO' (Public Utilities Commission of Ohio) is currently allowing the electric companies to phase out all of their special "all electric home" rates, and within 2 years I will be at the state average electrical rate whether I like it or not. I'm ready for it now though! In fact, as soon as the local electric company sees that I'm not following the typical winter usage curve that I've followed for the past 5 heating seasons (I havn't ran the old oil boiler for that long, as I've been using 100% electricity instead) they will jump my electric rate right up to the state average immediately. The electric companies in Ohio have the PUCO's "blessing" to do this to anyone whom they determine is no longer 100% electric.

What kind of resistance boiler do you have? Is it one of those small ones that mount to the wall? I may have to get one of those as my backup ( but hopefully NEVER use ).

My electric resistance boiler is an 'Electro Industries' "Electro-Boiler, model EB-S-23". It is rated at 22.5 KW, which is about 77,000 BTU's of input/output. It draws a whopping 94 amps when all stages are calling for heat simultaniously. I've seen new ones going for a bit less than $1,700 on the internet. Mine was in the house when we moved in about 11 years ago. The new ones still have the exact same model number. They do just hang on the wall. Mine has an internal capacity of 6.5 gallons of water.

They also make an EB-S-27 model which is rated at 27 KW, which is about 92,000 BTU's of input/output. It goes for about $1,860.

They also had Stockton coal as an option at a bit lower price, but the total difference at Coalway between their bulk Stockton pea and their bulk Blaschak pea was only $80 for 5 tons ($16 per ton), so I opted for the Blaschak. This being my first venture into Coal, I wasn't sure if a savings of $80 would be worth any potential for problems that are related to the coal, and I've never heard much about Stockton.

How much (if I can ask  ) do you have to pay for 5 ton in Ohio :o ? I HAD :( an all electric house, don't think I had a discount because of it, but their is a nifty gold colored coin inplanted in the front cement step.

Blaschak is a well respected product. I think you made a good choice considering you are new to burning coal. Once you have one winter under your belt you can experiment with different coal sources. I have talked to a few people that were impressed with Stockton Anthracite, I wouldn't be scared to try it.

My local (within 25 miles) options for "delivered" coal are (with calculated prices being for one ton):

1) Church Coal, Firewood, & Mulch's offering of Reading pea at $225/ton plus a flat fee of $40 to deliver it. For 5 tons this comes to $233 to my door (plus tax).
2) Coalway's Stockton pea at $219/ton delivered, plus an extra $1 for every mile that I live past a radius of 20 miles (for me, about 5), so Stockton = $220 to my door (plus tax).
3) Coalway's Blaschak pea at $235/ton delivered, plus an extra $1 for every mile that I live past a radius of 20 miles (for me, about 5), so Blaschak = $236 to my door (plus tax).

The two big names here are Blaschak and Reading, and the difference to my door for those two options was only $3 per ton, or $15 for 5 tons.
