Damn Lexmark! Need a new all-in-one printer. Suggestions?

PostBy: SMITTY On: Sat Jun 25, 2011 12:43 pm

Tried to save a buck by buying some ink off eBay. I install it & get error message " cartridge not supported". Try to ignore it ... but won't go away!! Shut down computer & restart .... barely got back on. Kept saying my version of windows was corrupted or something like that. Now the printer is not recognized no matter what USB port I plug it into. WTF!!!

I need this printer to make money ... and now it's costing me money!

Been reading reviews on Amazon about Kodak printers ... but they're scaring me. Lots of negatives for all kinds of issues.

Does a printer exist that has cheap ink that doesn't get sucked down in 10 pages? Does one exist that lasts more than 4 years?

I`m by far no expert Smitty but the wife & I got a Brother (kind of dual purpose printer/fax) about a year & a half ago that seems to be pretty good. All of them sell the printers fairly cheap & make the money off of ink. We got the Brother because the ink was a little bit more reasonable & it has separate colors rather than one color cartridge that mixes. Anyway so far so good with ours.

Smitty the cartridges are patented so they can't be made by anyone without a license. What you purchased is one that was refilled.

The other thing they are doing is putting a chip in them so when it does run out it won't register as filled when you refill it. There is ways around this, sounds me like you got one that is fubarred.

Printer manufactures don't sell printers, they sell ink and by weight it is one of the most expensive things on the planet.

First thing I would do is uninstall the printer and then reinstall.

SMITTY, my lexmark took a dump back when--actually--I was spending more on ink then it seemed worth---I got a KODAK ESP3200 series AiO--I can print stuff on it--if I were a rocket scientist, or had the need to read the instructions or watch the CD closer--I'm sure I could find out how to do the other hundred things it offers. toothy One thing I do know is that the ink is cheaper & I seem to have to buy a lot less of it--of course I just discovered that when it says--"replace cartridge" I've got another month on it---BUT--I don't use mine very much. I guess it's a pretty good unit & the price was right at WallyWorld ;) I got this one 2--3 yrs ago

Yeah, tried that already. Tried everything under the sun. Uninstalled driver. Reinstall driver. Uninstall printer. Reinstall printer. No go. $316 paperweight. You were right - those were refilled.

What a rackett that ink business is! I just can't believe this thing was working 100% fine until I installed that one black cartridge. After that everything went haywire. Thought my whole operating system was going to take a dump on me! When I restarted, I was immediately redirected to Microsoft's web page that was checking "Windows Authenticity". Apparently during the printer fiasco an unauthorized change was made to windows??? :?: Virus in an ink cartridge?

I can't begin to tell you how much I HATE all this electronic BS!! They're engineered to fail at a given time to keep the money machine rolling. Unbelievable.

Ok so we got HP & Kodak. My buddy recommended Kodak too for the cheap ink. Says he loves his ... but then I read reviews on Amazon & they scared me away. Lots of lemons out there apparently. Although this Lexmark had 35 reviews & 25 of them were negative. No surprise there ....

Gotta buy one this weekend. Almost bought the Kodak ESP 6150 .. then the 71xx & 91xx whatever those were .. then the Canon MX870. Seems like all of them use both color & black ink. That was the one thing I liked about my Lexmark - the ability to use black only. Apparently all of these new ones completely shut down - can't fax or scan when just ONE cartridge gets low until you replace both. Sounds like another rackett to me ....

Need to find one with a fax, duplex printing, & the ability to still use the damn thing if the stupid ink runs out. Not having any luck yet ....

Smitty, I got rid of all our HP printers, just because of the ink cartridge monopoly.
I got the Lexmark PRO-900. Does everything, except I can't figure out how to program it to go get me a beer when I want :D
We bought the 100XLA cartridges for it. When the printer warns me the cartridge ink is getting low, I simply refill the same cartridge with bottled ink. When I put the cartridge back in the printer, it will still tell me the ink is low for that cartridge. I simply do the "Cartridge Alignment" function, then the printer sees that cartridge as a new on.

I was trying to stay away from Lexmark because their ink is an absolute ripoff .... but that sounds like a great idea!

How good is the ink you use to refill? Where did you get it? The reason I ask is I have some bottles of ink I bought off some earthy folks on eBay, and it is absolute garbage! The colors are all strange - blues are more green & vice versa ... and if you get anywhere near moisture it'll run right off the page!

Samsung ML-1740 laser printer, uses a black toner cartridge, no color. We have a pair of these over 6 years, not once a problem, even using non-original toner. If i want color pictures, i get them from the drugstore or Walmart. I will never go back to a ink jet after using a laser printer. Once it warms up, 20-30 seconds, it spits out pages very fast. Cartridges are $70-80for Samsung , $49 for generic, but last a year or more. If you are only printing paper invoices or receipts, no need to use a ink jet. See what kind of mono color laser printers are on the market and prices, color laser the price goes way up.

I'm positive that all electronic devices have a "timer chip" somewhere inside them. The first time you power up a new device the chip begins it's countdown to doomsday.
My HP all in one printer/scanner suddenly quit a few months ago, without warning. Right now I'm using a borrowed Epson all in one that's the size of a small refrigerator.
I'd tell you what Consumer Reports recommends but I forgot my password and I'm waiting for the email from them so I can reset it. :P

Actually I believe one printer manufacturer did just that, I remember reading something about one working fine and then some kind service message came up and it wouldn't work no more. Something along those lines.

It's a giant scam, best printer I had was a lexmark I got back in 97. You'd be able to print hundreds if not thousand pages one cartridge. You could keep running until it was completely dry. You could set the cartridge on the side and it would come back to life after while and get some more prints out of it or use the old ones for draft printings. It finally wore out and wouldn't feed the paper right anymore.
